referencing Soilbleed (CD, EP) NTK 016
I've said it before and I've said it again - I love a good EP. For many people, listening to music involves an attention starved mindset and a computer dependent format. It is my deeply held belief that first rate full length albums are becoming somewhat of a rarity, a fact made worse because the MP3 transforms listening to something that goes for an hour into a fractured experience.
So - when someone like Grendel release an EP that has at the very least two very decent tracks on it - I tend to go bananas about it. The two standouts on this one are "Soilbleed" and "Zombie Nation". The first has been a recent dance floor favourite (it makes inventive use of Stanley Kubrick's "Full Metal" jacket drill seargent "One Two Three Four" sample) and the second is a growled up (that is added vocals) version of the uber commercial club hit of the same time. The "Soilbleed" remixes on this had it tough being strong contenders because they didn't use the same sample. Regardless, they did a decent job of reinterpreting it. And then there's the two Grendel tracks - dancey, full of creative samples, and biting and growly as always.
My only complaint with this is the final track. It is a sort of mellow, ambient sopoforic creation and really did not work for me in the slightest.
The fact that the two standout tracks have some sort of gimmick going for them (one is based on a clever sample and the other is effectively a pop cover) shouldn't put you off. Gimmicks don't have to be a bad thing, and these guys certainly know how to make the most of it.
Now if only other artists would release more EPs...
