referencing The Eighth (CD, Album, Reissue) hat ART CD 6036
With fewer instruments in the mix than It Is In the Brewing Luminous from the year before, this performance is a lot easier to digest (in as much as that is possible with Cecil Taylor). No less frenetic, but with more room to breath due to it being less dense, this will find it's way to my stereo much more often than the aforementioned album. Both performances are still towering, colossal. - Jimmy Lyons is Cecil's partner in sonic crime. Lyons horn has a accessibility issue with its nasal tone. He rips like Charlie Parker which he is typically assigned as a disciple. The conversations and interplay between Lyons and Taylor is amazing and this album is one of its best examples. Parker and Bakr more than hold up their end of the bargain. Definitely Cecil in a quartet setting that is top shelf.
