"69 Police" is sophisticated breaks bordering on big beat that combines '60s psychedelic rock and jazz-funk with '50s electronica. It's built around an adapted bassline from Italian psychedelic rock group Le Orme's 1969 "Ad Gloriam", with Holmes providing the catchy organ melody over the top. The quirky electronic sound effects in the introduction add a '90s electronica feel, but are actually from Tom Dissevelt & Kid Baltan's 1959 experimental track, "Vibration". Expertly closes with some gentle jazz-funk from "Oh, Calcutta" by The Dave Pell Singers. Reached #53 in the UK singles chart. (7) referencing 69 Police (CD, Single, Digilok) GOBCD 30
David Holmes' bouncy _69 Police_ gets two post-rock tinged remixes here. Kieran Hebden, of Four Tet and Fridge fame, sets his crisp edges to the rhythm first, then gets things a strumming with a clear guitar line. Skylab (aided here by Duncan Forbes of Spooky) offers a surprisingly uncomplicated mix, still tossing in some of their trademark wobbly electrics, but otherwise keeping things simple by introducing only a looping horn halfway through. Well, it's still as simple as they can make it, at least.
