The Dream Syndicate – Ghost Stories

Almost a farewell album for The Dream Syndicate. This 1988 GHOST STORIES has been the last truly significant recording for the group led by alternative-rock musician Steve Wynn and it’s full of great moments: from the full-bodied rock of "Loving The Sinner Hating The Sin"; to the rockabilly-blues of "Weathered And Tom", passing through beautiful electric ballads such as "The Side I'll Never Show"; «I Have Faith» and – mostly - «Black». About this latter, an echoing of Neil Young’s sound is of no surprise as Elliot Mazer - the producer of this album – had been previously behind Young’s "Harvest" and "Times Fade Away". Worth mentioning is also the intimate and lightly psychedelic «When The Curtain Falls» and the excellent cover of «See That My Grave Is Kept Clean», a no-frills classic blues, signed by Blind Lemon Jefferson and covered by a hundred others (Bob Dylan, twice) next to which this version of our "Union of Dreamers" has an appeal of its own. In conclusion, a highly recommended album for the aficionados of the “Paisley Underground” genre which will be surely appreciated also by all lovers of Californian alt-rock of the eighties.
