Andy Stott's chilly debut, MERCILESS, starts with the subtle, melancholy throb of "Florence." Stott keeps the bass deep, even with the melody takes a lighter turn, as with "Edyocat." But he can also go the abstract route, with the subterranean rumbles of "Choke," while "Hi-Rise" is much lighter on its feet. Though the mood stays subdued, Stott manages to find so many variations within that general feeling, like the delicate piano of the title track and "Peace of Mind" or the high-low dichotomy of "Hertzog" or the funk of "Boutique," even as it shifts into jazzy territory. But it's the slow, heavy dub of "Blocked" that stands out even further. A great debut.
