- Derrick Carter presents his long-awaited album Squaredancing in a Round House, and it’s quite a bumper! It features Carter’s own special blend of herbs and spices with a solid bass and the wobbliest synths this side of a gelatin factory. There’s also a certain Afrocentric feel to the music, as if Carter is reminding the listener that the roots of house music are undeniably African-American (but not in the sometimes heavy-handed Moodymann way). Carter also provides vocals for tracks like “If I” -- and although his voice isn’t the strongest, it fits the unique DIY spirit that pervades this album. The childish vocoded voice on “Friends Talk” is as humorous as the voice on “Where You At?” is strident. “All Dreams Collide” showcases Carter’s aptitude at doing melodic deep house. An album of wonderful range and groove.
- Ask ten people to name their favorite DJ and you will most likely get ten divergent responses, but ask ten DJs the same question and you will hear the name Derrick Carter mentioned early and often. Hailing from the windy city, DC is the leading ambassador of the new Chicago House sound. Funky, soulful and always original, this disc will make you bob your head, shake your booty and most importantly, smile. And isn’t that what its all about? Highly recommended.
- What a great album ! I had to wait more than 3 months until the vinyl got repressed , but it was worth the wait . Definitely one of the best Deep/Tech/House whatever records. What strikes me most besides the cool groves are his vocals ,which realy made me think about 'Where I'm At' . this man's a genius and the CLASSIC Label is miles away leading the deep house label scene and pushing the boundaries further every time. Big Up !!
