- Edited 5 years agoFinally I came around and purchased this. For me the sole reason to buy this was the Claude Young, Ian O’Brian remix. I first heard it ages ago on Slam’s 1996 ‘Essential Mix’ which is something that still recommend to you listen to if you haven’t already. The remix was easily the high light of the mix and still somehow it took me a long while to buy this. I rate it very high since it’s just sheer perfection, emotional Motor City techno. Especially Ian O’Brian has some great productions in his catalog but I don’t think that he has topped this one. Then again, not many have.
I’m however a bit disappointed with the other productions offered exclusively here. I mean, Derrick Carter, Mike Huckaby, Carl Craig, all great producers who I admire and actively collect but their productions here just don’t stand out and meet the usual expectations. The KDJ remix is rather nice house jam and probably after saying that I can confess that I’m not a great fan of his productions. The label boss Russ Gabriel’s remix is also nice but not that special.
But never the less for me this was worth buying just for that one special remix that hasn’t lost its magic ever since I first heard it. - This comp blew me away when I first heard it as the tracks were so diverse but consistently excellent.
The album stretches from straight up techno-house a-la Derrick Carter to calmer, deeper numbers by Paul Hannah, KDJ and Mark Broom.
I particularly like the KDJ track which is characteristically all over the place. I don't think anyone else was making music like this at the time. Even though remixes, the tracks have the 'ferox sound' imprinted all over them!
None of these tracks are available elsewhere, so KDJ-collectors, get hunting!!
