Coltrane's third session as a leader, recorded on 15 September 1957 for Blue Note, although he was still under contract of Prestige (that is why the rear jacket has: "John Coltrane performs by courtesy of Prestige Records"). The sextet includes Lee Morgan (tp), Curtis Fuller (tb), Kenny Drew (p), Paul Chambers (3) (b) and "Philly" Joe Jones (d).

- Could you please confirm this is stereo or mono version? It's bit misleading because in the description above it says mono but on the cover there is a stereo sign.

Edited 16 days agoSounds great! Maybe cut a bit quiet but still has plenty of top end sparkle and a balanced low end. Maybe a little closed in on the soundstage (which I prefer).
Happy to have a cheap stereo copy now since the Complete Masters tone poet is ridiculously expensive (and I don't need the outtakes on vinyl). Although I'm sure the Kevin Gray mastering is excellent...
I'm sure some of the cheaper reissues from the past 10 years sound just as good, but there's a charm to having an older pressing like this that you don't get from generic modern reissues.
This record has no business being this good. Keep your copy in good shape, you’ll thank yourself for it in years to come.
Here we have an amazing John Coltrane album and this Blue Note 75 reissue sounds great. Maybe not so good as Tone Poet, but it sounds great.

This is a great version of this classic masterpiece for the money. You can't get a better version at this price range. The mastering is great and the pressing is really good (my version is a little bit noisy during the silent parts). All instruments sound natural and well defined. Most likely the Analogue Production pressings sound better but you'll have to pay ten times the price.
My copy does not say STEREO at all on it and it is stereo. The label says MicroGroove and not stereo. Somebody goofed!
