Personally I think this sounds quite good, and I don't think I can justify recommending anyone spend the money on a clean OG if you really just want to hear Giant Steps in mono. Along with this pressing I also recently acquired a clean orange/purple DG Atlantic mono (I know it's not a black label, but the prices for those are insane and I doubt the difference is massive). I spent a while comparing and to me the differences are negligible, but usually come down to personal preference. The main thing I can see someone not really liking in this pressing is the amount of bass, there's a lot, and I think it fits the record most of the time but can be a bit boomy on occasion. I also think this pressing is less compressed in general. A bit more air when compared to the early Atlantic, and it allows you to hear the whole ensemble much easier. The Atlantic though handles Coltrane in a much better way in my opinion. He is playing for you. And it's quite wonderful to hear. With that comes a caveat that sometimes (as previously mentioned) the rest of the band can be a bit difficult to hear when Coltrane really gets going. I think picking this pressing up is a safe bet, at least until you can find a clean OG if you're still that interested. I wish I could hear the ERC, but I don't think I'll ever be able to make myself spend that much money on one record. The prices for that are just insane.

I also wish that we'd get a real modern audiophile mono pressing cause Atlantic clearly still has the tape, hopefully with the success they had with the recent pressing of My Favorite Things (which is fantastic) they'll follow suit with Giant Steps.

The print quality of the labels are reminiscent of a bootleg. Surprised that these labels are so low-res.

Superb pressing with a great soundstage and instrument separation. If you want a great sounding pre-digital copy of this album on a budget, look no further.

They really hard panned the saxophone on this album didnt they.. You can really hear that nasally tone from Johns axe too. Pretty good pressing.

A little sleeper version of Giant Steps. Sure, it doesn't have the original artwork, but at the price you'll be able to pick this up (offline, especially) this is a fine sounding, fully analogue stereo version pressed on high-quality vinyl. Recommended.

Super-dynamic pressing. Extremely warm and very punchy. Worth getting if you can.

Sax feels great. Drums fall into the background comfortably. Love this pressing, finding a nm copy for $40 was an absolute steal in my opinion. After hearing a solid original mono copy it's tough to beat, I'll compare to the Atlantic 75 reissue when I get it, but for the time being this is the best Coltrane record in my collection.

Not an audiophile pressing but it's a very nice one, especially for the 7euro i paid for it.

Lots of detail on Coltrane's sax. Bass is a little boomy and the band's sounds a bit veiled most of the time. Some of that could be in the mix, though, as I remember the CD (and also his other Atlantic albums) sounding a bit similar balance-wise. I'd give it a 7+/10

No major issues with pressing quality - one rather quiet low-pitched (thankfully) stiching spot on A1, few small pops here and there - aparat from that no issues.

The cover looks OK. The label looks terrible - looks like low quality scan printed out on a home printer.

Great sounding mastering and audiophile pressing. Transparent, no distortion, silent background. Occasional pop/tick but are the type that usually disappear after a couple of plays. Very faint crackling heard on last track of side A but nothing to worry about (and I'm pretty picky)
