John Coltrane – A Love Supreme

Yes, this is an RKS@SS production. Recorded to DSD during the same sessions, and using the same tapes as the previously issued AS 33 & UHQR 45.

What psychopath mixed the sax all the way left? Not my favorite

Great press, but Coltrane is too hot in the left channel.
If he was dialed down a few Db it would be a 5-5

I found this at my local record store without the Walmart sticker. strange it's a Walmart variant but happy to have.

It definitely sounds different from my AS 33. Better? I don't now. A bit different for sure. A tad more air, the sax and the bass are more refined.
Now the real question is: am I hearing the famous "UHQR treatment" or just a slightly different remastering here?
Although this UHQR sounds great, my suggestion is to go for the AS 33, which is really close and represents a way better cost/performance choice.

Easy 5 stars on this one. I can only compare to AS 33rpm, which is also excellent. I don’t have much new to add bc several people have already noted the differences that I perceive — better bass presence; more balance across the instruments — not the left/right panning balance, but the relative/comparative volume of each in the overall mix; Coltrane’s sax is more lush/full with less edge; absolutely silent noise floor/pressing.

Whether the steep price is “worth it” is in the eye of the beholder. For me, this album is too important not to have found out whether it is worth it to me. Without a doubt, it is (to me).

This has to be the most immersive possible way to experience ALS. I played the AS pressing to prep my ears while I unboxed and read the pressing info. Dropping the needle on the UHQR I immediately felt the air around and clarity of each instrument. While yes JC and Elvin dominate left and right (they are stunning to behold) the piano and bass do come through more clearly than I’ve heard before (but I do not own an OG). Every minute comes across so powerfully it was truly the most moving experience ever hearing this album for me, especially with reading the booklet/taking in the images and the printing quality of the box and the gatefold jacket. I’ve been collecting records since the mid ‘80s and I count this as one of my prized possessions.

The copy I got from Target sounds really really good. No issues with warping whatsoever, although I do hear the high pitched background noise in the left speaker on side A that another reviewer mentioned. But that’s only barely noticeable during the quietest parts.

Was this mastered by Ryan K Smith? The booklet was all in Japanese and I didn't see any explicit mastering credits.

I got a Target copy with the "exclusive" sticker on the outside, but the cover has the Impulse logo in a dot like on this one: https://www.discogs.com/release/20936377-John-Coltrane-A-Love-Supreme.

No warping on mine like others are saying.
