Black Francis is back, this time solo, with a refreshing blast of rock and roll. It's not the Pixies, of course, but it's damn close: in a recent interview he admitted trying to coax the rest of the gang into a full-length follow up to the one-off "Bam Thwok" single. Personality conflicts aside, "Bluefinger" might very well have been the template he would have brought to the studio. Straightforward and confident, Black Francis has produced a batch of 11 songs that are a lot tighter and reined in compared to his prolific, country-tinged solo material. Too bad Kim Deal isn't the female voice - apparently, it's his wife - and there's no Joey Santiago. What a shame. A comeback album of this quality would have trumped any other reunion of late.
