Queens Of The Stone Age ‎– R

The initial pressing identifiable by "FSV" and Rays in the runout denoting it was pressed by First Sound and Vision who closed early in 2000 mastered by Ray Staff and the catalog number 490 864-1. Production continued with Optimal Media Production the same year but they omitted the catalog number using "000 000-0" instead. The Optimal Media Production version was repressed at least once with a different mastering engineer responsible for side B. Around 2008 GZ Digital Media produced a facsimile of the initial pressing using the catalog number 490 864-1, but instead of having limited edition stickers and parental stickers affixed, they were actually printed as part of the artwork.

This pressing sounds fantastic, and relative to the cost of other QotSA albums it's a must own. Bought it on discogs and got exactly what I expected. Sweet.

A decent amount of surface noise through first play. Song skipping is prominent as well. Despite the extra LP with Live performances, you'd be better off getting the official Re-release.

I agree with what people are saying. This press is the version to own. The sound is just spectacular. If the press you are looking at it DOES NOT have the promo sticker with sharp 90 degree corners and the words "Don't make me beg, just fuck me" in small print on the back cover, DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY.

Does anyone have any experience with the 2005 version with catalogue number 74249?

Thanx in advance.

Queens of the Stone Age's 'Rated R' was one of the first records I added to my vinyl collection and, overall, it was well worth it. I say this in relation to the sound of my particular pressing. It is absolutely superb and plays wonderfully on my system. Full credit must go to the mastering of these records on vinyl.

That leads on to my next point. When purchasing this, I must confess that I did have to pay a bit of money for this one. However, rest assured: it was well worth the asking price. The sound of 'Rated R' on vinyl, when compared with an iPod or CD release, will blow you away; I guarantee it.

So, to conclude, I would highly recommend a purchase of 'Rated R' on vinyl. I really cannot stress here how well these Queens records sound on vinyl, a top job has been done.

I hope this review helps. Thanks for reading.

I THINK this is the version I recently picked up (new) at a local store, but there is no insert included with this... Is that just a copy from a master that wasn't edited out, or is mine a different pressing?

The first record is garbage, there is a ton of surface noise and there is a skip in between the songs. The quality of the songs sounds crap as well, and im pretty sure you would get better quality from the CD release, what is disappointing. The second record is way better, but it still has some flaws. The tracklisting of the second record should not be a necessity to you unless you are a diehard QOTSA fan. 2/5

In accord with 1manband's comments below, there should be an additional 2014 version of this release, pressed and cut at GZ Vinyl, by their new DMM process (http://www.gzvinyl.com/Manufacturing/Mastering/DMM-cutting.aspx). It explains the quality difference, with this press being the lower quality of the two. The runout on the latter GZ press includes the distinguishing "117401E1/A," instead of "77874E1/A" from this release. It is also distinct from http://www.discogs.com/Queens-Of-The-Stone-Age-X/release/6323619 in several respects. Check this link to sort it out a bit: http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/queens-of-the-stone-age-rated-x-2nd-pressing.214283/page-2#post-10793085. It appears GZ weighed in on the discussion on Steve Hoffman with this comment: "Yes, this is a 2014 reissue cut here at GZ Vinyl by our new DMM mastering system. The previous 77874E1,E2 version was cut elsewhere and we only press it."

I agree with those that have pointed out the lack of bass, the quiet drums and the quiet overall volume. The highs are crisp and clear & there is barely any surface noise. Dynamics certainly could be better, but if this is the copy you have, it's not too bad.
