The Incredible Jimmy Smith* – Midnight Special

If you love that greasy gutbucket organ/guitar blues, this record is a good choice. Predating Midnight Blue and Blue Bash by 2 years, and Organ Grinder Swing by 4, the magic formula was already well in place. Turrentine's tone is bright and forward with some growl that is matched by Burrell's slightly more hairy than usual guitar tone.

I'm picking up light distortion on the transients, mostly tenor. Otherwise a decent sounding pressing from the mid to late '70s.

Grab it if you see it, you cannot go wrong.

Absolute Killer sounding Reissue. I bet this is All Analog, if not, this is one of the best sounding digital records I own. Amazing.

I have this on CD and have been listening to it for 20+ years, I know the recordings very well; this pressing is decent nearing on borderline crap. There is obvious compression which has affected the top end in a bad way as the hi hats/ride cymbals are distorted with zero airy, crispy top that I'm familiar with. The vinyl itself isn't high quality as it has dimples in more than a few places as well as a cloudy film on both side. I deep cleaned it with minimal results. I will try an acid wash as my final attempt...GREAT ALBUM otherwise!

It's a shame to have the rights to such good music and to manage it so badly. 50 years ago they had the technology and today they do not have it? This record is worth releasing in the Tone Poet series and selling for $ 20, because we spent the other 20 for this mess.

New: Blue note promo paper inner sleeve. Mostly, not totally clean looking, no obvious scratches, Copy has intermittent crispies and surface noise - enough to be slightly irritating. Disc is warped (a noticeable hop), but hop does not make obvious distortion. Love the music set, but needs to be turned up a lot on my system and then has some decent dynamics, not very vivid to my ears.

A favorite in my collection... audiophile all the way and man just great music. If you are into jazz guitar you'll enjoy Kenny Burrell on this one amongst other things.

Wonderful presentation and sound from the analogue productions acoustech guys. The opening track Midnight special really gets you in the mood.

Pure or better incredible Jimmy. The same line up and dress code like Back At The Chicken Shack. Excellent sound with warm, smooth analog feeling, even cut from hi-res files. Vinyl flat and quiet ( not so common from Optimal ). Highly recommended.
