Notes
Coltrane's Ascension was originally released with the second take of the music from the recording session on June 28, 1965. These original pressings are commonly referred to as 'Edition I' and are grouped in a separate master release (Ascension (Edition I)).
Shortly thereafter, Coltrane expressed a desire to instead use the first take. Impulse swapped out the stamper(s) for one(s) with the first take and inscribed 'Edition II' in the dead wax - ceasing production of the original version.
If you have an orange/black labelled pressing of Ascension from the mid-to-late 1960s, the presence or absence of 'Edition II' in the dead wax is the simplest way to determine which version you have.
The solo order differs slightly between the takes; Edition II also features no drum solo by Elvin Jones.
Some later CD issues have included both takes.

I love Coltrane but this LP gives me a migraine. Ten words.
Such a great sounding vinyl. I spent 85$ for a ex/ex sleeve where the white still looks amazing. Frame worthy forsure. I don’t see this record ever out in the wild except one time before i was super into Coltrane. I now have every free jazz record he did alive. Just a few more of the posthumous albums and I’ll have all of his free jazz recordings. I love coltranes music so much.referencing Ascension (LP, Reissue) 5522-9

Although it states that it is stereo on the back cover, having just played my copy of this pressing, it sounds mono to me - or if it is stereo, it’s incredibly narrow. I also notice it doesn’t mention stereo on the labels. 
An undeniably groundbreaking & important album although some will not tolerate it & some will claim it’s a masterpiece. Only you can decide. Me...? A MASTERPIECE (and a great cover)!
Why Edition II?
By accident Bob Thiele put out the wrong take. After he went through the initial press run, he switched the masters to the other take and inscribed Edition II (2) on the inside of the runout circle.
This version (Edition II) does NOT have a drum solo on side two.
Spine has 3 x MCA stars at the bottom.
Front cover has MCA Records in lower right corner.
Back cover has MCA Records in the lower left corner.
Non-laminated gatefold cover.

Like a few of the more 'difficult' albums, I find this only made sense to me in an analog format, that allows some of the textures and atmosphere to come through - I felt similarly about the first Jesus and Mary Chain album - all the necessary elements are here that helped me make sense of this recording - nice copy that is much more affordable than a first press- matrix runout extra: SXT (plus six more words to add)

Mine edition is the 1972 version but with the Van Gelder stamp en de Edition II in the runout. Is is the same version?
