This is probably Hammill's best solo album. On this album he gets help with synth programming from David Hentschel (future Genesis producer, and Trident studio engineer), drums from Guy Evans, and while Paul Whitehead (Genesis and VdGG album cover artist) gets credit from percussion, he was unaware he even appeared on the album (the fact he moved to the United States at this time has a lot to do with it). Peter Hammill plays many of the keyboards including the ARP synthesizer, piano and even Mellotron. While I can't be sure what ARP is being used (most sources state the ARP 2600, but I doubt it, even the original LP, which I own simply states "ARP synthesizer"), I suspect it's David Hentschel's ARP 2500 (which was used on Elton John's Funeral for a Friend), as many of the sounds I hear sound like it's beyond the ARP 2600's capability. Plus the fact Hammill's previous album, The Silent Corner and the Empty Stage, and following, Nadir's Big Chance, features no ARP whatsoever. "Ferret and Featherbird" is a nice acoustic piece, a piece written in the late '60s, so it probably wouldn't be out of place on The Aerosol Grey Machine. "No More (The Sub-Mariner)" is a great, sinister piece with that pulsing synth. "Tapeworm" really rocks out, and if David Jackson was present, could easily pass for VdGG. "Faint-Heart and the Sermon" is a dramatic piece, but I really dig those Mellotron passages, in fact there's more Mellotron on this album than all the VdGG albums put together (he also used tron on The Silent Corner and the Empty Stage, as well as Chameleon in the Shadow of the Night, and there's only a small amount on Pawn Hearts and Still Life, perhaps World Record). "The Comet, The Course, The Tail" is another great acoustic piece, that leads up to "Gog Magog (In Bromine Chambers)", another sinister, a dramatic piece with harmonium that eventually leads up to lots of distortion and feedback. A lot of people really have a hard time with this part, I guarantee you it's not an easy listen.

Ran out of VdGG albums? I guarantee you won't be disappointed with In Camera!
