The Afrobeat doesn't stop on Antibalas' second album TALKATIF. Even though "Gabe's New Joint" lays on the thick Latin jazz horns, the rhythms and bass offer an unmistakable whiff of Afrobeat grooves. The title track is an extended jam that never loses its momentum, plunging headlong into some Hammond organ madness before the vocals come to give a new focus. "Hypocrite," in comparison, is more sedate, putting the trumpet front and center, while a loping dub slides across "World Without Fear." The infectious bassline on "War is a Crime" keeps things moving smoothly, and then lends a bounce to "Nyash." "N.E.S.T.A. 75" sticks with a more spare arrangement, as each instrument comes in to bid farewell to the album. And maybe that's all there is to say.
