Notes
There are three versions of the back cover of the original American release:
1st - Has an image of actor Eric Emerson projected upside-down on the wall behind the band. Commonly known as the "Torso" cover (despite showing only Emerson's head and arms), this variant is also referred to as “first state” or the “Emerson Cover.”
2nd - The actor's image is covered by a large black sticker.
3rd - The actor's image is airbrushed out.
Historical info: The actor Eric Emerson (2), protagonist of some multimedia films projected behind the group during Andy Warhol's Exploding Plastic Inevitable, filed a lawsuit against the record label for the non-payment of the rights regarding his image that can be seen upside down on the back cover of the first version.
This led to the album bring temoprarily withdrawn from sale, likely in late 1967, while a large black lawsuit sticker was applied to the rear sleeve of remaining stock. On the rear sleeve of all subsequent pressings, the image is airbrushed to obscure Emerson.

Reviews
- i dont think this is a 1971 print, like the german 80s lp tha says p and c 1966
this is a much later barcode etc.. - Found a copy for £15 a few months ago in a charity shop. Nothing wrong with it. Bearing in mind the album is so poorly produced, the sound quality isn't bad at all! Very few clicks overall
referencing The Velvet Underground & Nico (LP, Album, Mono, East Coast Pressing, Emerson Torso Cover) V-5008
I have this one and it was the start of my collection from 1983 onwards. I have cd's and lp's of this in various degrees.
This copy has on the 'Chair/Breaking glass' part of 'European Son' the most 'atmospheric/bouncing' sound.
It is less clear on other copies. I don't know why it is but this was one of my first dissapointments with cd, as I believed in
cd (till a degree I still do) . I was used to listen at this Dutch print and found the cd (first time they came out) a bit dissapointing.
Though I did not compare this yet to the later re-masters. The sound of the vinyl may have some flaws but it streams just more natural from the stereo.- I have a beat up copy (looks G but play Vg. Ah the solid 60s records). The mastering is so great, clear, presence, soundstage.
Like a lot I don't have a original but for 1 years apart it magical. Cheers - I don't have an original to compare to, but based on years of vinyl listening experience I would say this is a good, but not quite great pressing. I think it is very well balanced considering the limitations of the source, but the one major flaw is there is pretty audible sibilance on some tracks that have upper range instruments, like the xylophone on Sunday Morning, or the bells on Femme Fatale. However, most of the tracks don't suffer from this issue, so I would recommend picking this one up unless you can afford an original.
- Nice reproduction. Sounds fine. You must remember that this is a very low-fi recording. Even the originals sound hazy & distant.
- Honestly, not sure where all the hate comes from with this release. Guess the label has a reputation. Honestly it sounds fine, mind you this album has *never* sounded particularly good but it mostly replicates the sound I would expect from this release on a heavy pressing with a quality case (despite no peeling banana) the only thing lost in this mix is the intro of the piano at the end of "Waiting for the Man" which is drowned a bit in the mix. Otherwise, decent release.
- I wondered why this was so cheap at my local resell! Sounds slightly over-engineered, like the inputs were up a little too high when it was copied out. The description is dead on for what I have in my hand, here in the US. Thank you to whomever took the time to enter this and explain what this is.
- HELLO EVERYBODY - long shot, I know, but does anybody have a SLEEVE for this? My copy is currently vinyl only!
- I guess this listing should also state this is the Greg Calbi cut, supervised by Tom Wilson, as in the red label Polydor version.
