Felt ‎– Crumbling The Antiseptic Beauty

Genre:
Style:
Year:
Notes:
Felt's debut album released by Cherry Red in February 1982. Running at just over 30 minutes, this is sometimes considered to be a "mini-album" but is not officially recognised as such. The original printing of the sleeve shows Lawrence (5)'s full face. This was quickly replaced with a new sleeve featuring a vertical black bar obscuring the left portion of the face. A reissue in 1984 had a fractionally wider black bar and featured new Shanghai Packaging Company labels. The card sleeve reissue from 2003 dispensed with the black bar but re-cropped the image to achieve a similar effect.

A new recording of "Cathedral" was featured as the B-side to 1985's Felt - Primitive Painters.

I don’t think the inner pic is Maurice deebank with Lawrence on the cd reissue cardboard sleeve edition. I think it might be another member (Gary?)

Maurice's guitar twinkles, glimmers with a phosphorescent glow. It pulls and tugs. Oh it aches, crumbles even, but it dances, drifts, skips (never trips!) over the chords with hope. Some of the most gorgeous guitar work of the whole era, or any era for that.

Listen if you like long guitar solos and spaced out post-punk that's mild and powerless. A cohesive combination of virtuioistic guitar work, heavily reverbed drums that consist entirely of toms, and Lawrence's pouty, effeminate singing. Music for sitting looking out the window and feeling sad but alright. It's like if The Durutti Column had been more of a rock band than in addition to being a vessel for song-length guitar solos, though that's basically what Evergreen Dazed and the last two tracks are.

My copy sounds great! My old set-up was really bad, so that's probably what made it sound distorted initially. The sleeves aren't thick but I personally find them to be quite elegant.

Have just bought all the reissues. Sleeves are nice but not very thick indeed. Haven't listened to the sound yet and yes, no download code & no lyrics ! These people should pay attention to the fact that a lot of bands are from U.K or the U.S.A, so printing lyrics is much appreciated by customers from other countries. In these reissues, we have absolutely nothing axcept the LP itself. What's more, the inner plastic sleeve is also crappy and when it is paper black, it is paper only which makes me crazy ! No, really, it's a bad bad job, even if it's nice to have these FELT reissues !

You should note that along with other Cherry Red issues from this period both the disc and cover are 'Made in France' for the UK market and you can see this in the pics shown for the 'UK' issue in this listing and also should come with a french generic inner sleeve 'PRECAUTIONS ESSENTIELLES...'

Sounds great but really could've used a studier sleeve, especially considering the price. And I agree about the download code, especially considering that some of these reissues have a different mix from the original.

I purchased the 24bit resolution remasters from HD Tracks. The guitars sound like diamonds. It's quite stunning.

If they were going to remaster - why no download code, the bloody thing cost enough. I totally agree - this cover design could have been way less flimsy. Too thin, almost like a photograph.... be careful opening.

Bought mine yesterday in Japan. It sounds crystal clear - no distortion. The Splendour of Fear sounds stunning too. My only gripe is that the sleeves are much flimsier than the originals. They look good though.
