Recorded in New York on December 18, 1950 these four tracks were Ellington's first LP in the 12" format, issued on Columbia's Masterworks imprint, and it is among the earliest such LPs released by Columbia (1951). Containing three proven compositions, the fourth (The Tattooed Bride) was first played in 1948 in concert, and recorded in a studio session only now. The LP was reissued by Columbia in 1956 (CL 825) with a different, blue sleeve design, and keeping this design again in 1973 in Columbia Special Products' Collectors' Series (JCL 825).

I love listening to this. When originally recorded and pressed, it was one of the very early 33-1/3 recordings instead of 78rpm. It must have seemed a luxury, to have this time available on an album and it's reflected in the pacing, especially on Mood Indigo. It's like, languid, like "No rush gentlemen, we have all the time in the world."
And it is masterful, just genius.
I have heard only this copy, nothing to compare it to, but it sounds great, I lucked onto an immaculate copy. Mono rocks, that new-fangled "stereo" is just a passing fad.
Sounds REALLY, REALLY good! An excellent session that belongs in any audiophile collection.

Fabulous timepiece = masterpiece. If not for the music alone, the recording technology of 72 years ago plus modern remastering, cutting and pressing capabilities make it an absolute must have for not only fans of legacy big band jazz but any lover of music played on the legacy media - vinyl. Heaven. When you consider that this was recorded in 1950, yet it’s still the most vibrant and ‘in the room’ sounding jazz I own, it’s amazing. I may pick up the 45 to compare, but instantly my favourite. A must have.- Sounds different than the 2004 Sony DSD master, and no extra tracks, but comparable to the SACD if one can believe it.
- Amazing edition of this landmark recording and then some. Compared to early French release and the Analogue Productions SACD hybrid, this is far and away the best.

I will add to the chorus of praise here and say that this is absolutely stunning both musically and sonically.
I did not have noticeable pops or clicks with mine but I do wet clean all of my records before playing them.
I could not recommend this more wholeheartedly.
