So many stellar songs on this release! Was very pleased to find this treasure in the midst of a cd bin at a local record store. My wife thought I found gold…I did.referencing Sticks And Stones (CD, Album) 7100518679
77s stepped into the music scene during the rumblings of punk, alternative and new wave that starting to push the edges of the CCM (Contemporary Christian Music) Market in the early and mid 80′s. A few bands refused to stay safe and would talk about the struggles of being a human and walking in a fallen world, honestly trying to work it out in song and lyric with hammer and anvil creating timeless messages. So with no real fault of their own becoming the “Bad Boys” of Christian music hitting the edges with integrity of the struggle we all have walking with God. Dealing with lust, pride, death and the legalistic religious church.
Sticks and Stones 77s fourth album to me was the pinnacle of the 77′s songwriting both musically and lyrically. The way Mike Rowe crafted a song became timeless and new with each listen. Now 15 years later it is still fresh because Mike could weave the classic rock and blues with a modern day indie flare that were stitched seamlessly together. Some of the albums songs were taking from their previous Island release only on the CD (U2 Label) from 1987 simply called The 77′s, a very good record in it’s own right. The songs on Sticks and Stones just seemed to sound and flow better than the previous and became a instant favorite among fans. The guitar tones, harmonies and great production make the hooks and licks on the album even more of a ear candy event. The lyrics at times could bring you to tears or just make you look at yourself in the mirror and make you think about becoming a person that relies on God because of the desperation of this human life we have to try and maneuver through. Desperation in our faults and sin but always calling on God for help or forgiveness. Songs like Pearls Before Swine and Perfect Blues deal with fornication and how rotten a person or man can be when he is ruled by his sin or lust and who becomes hurt. Something very few bands in the “Christian market” would touch. It is very human lyrically showing pain but also we have a “Bottom Line” in following Christ.
