Reviews
- The SF hippie ethos is in full flower with this feelgood band blending hybrid elements of jazz, R&B, soul, pop, horn rock & LSD idealism across four sprawling sides.
Bill Champlin is the underrated star of the 60s SF scene & is still rockin’ today.
Funky, soulful, R&B rockin' musical statements.
“The band insisted on furnishing their own cover art - in this case it was a collage that various friends had put together. Embedded in the artwork an unhappy ex-girlfriend had scrawled an obscenity that somehow escaped notice until after the album had been released. Capitol recalled copies of the album and supposedly had employees scratch the offending word out. Needless to say, The Sons saw a major share of expected profits disappear as Capitol charged them for all of the associated costs.” [Ref: RDTEN1] - mine looks like this but is a green label? any info? it doesn't have written distributed in Canada on the bottom of the label either
- As per the discussion below, to summarize: There are three versions of the first LP: 1) Original version with "dirty" words fully visible. 2) The dirty words are scratched out... actual scratch marks. 3) Reprinted cover with the dirty words blanked out.
- The words "Sons of Champlin" are cropped nearly off the right edge. There is a play on the peace symbol, rendered as an ad for Mercedes Benz. Then of course, there is the Sagittarius and the pointers: "Big Gunner," Big Sign," "Big (fucking) Deal," "Levels," "Ha Ha." The addition to Big Deal is in another hand from the original, added later.
- Interesting to determine if your gatefold album is the original release of 1969 (heavy cardboard sleeve, thin pasted-on paper), herewith a quote from an auction description (2009) that can help you: " (...) buried in it on both sides the word f***king in very small black handwritten letters in the box that says "Big Deal". Very discreet, but very upsetting to Capitol Records who had employees scratch off by hand the offending word on every copy they could get their hands on. Next time you find one with the original Capitol Rainbow labels (like this one), feel the cover and you can feel where the scratch is, and where the small offending word is written." Furthermore the album contained a still-life art-work with a small legend "Give Away". (See all images.) By the way: the album fetched $ 56,00.
