I also applaud both Lou and Metallica for doing something that nobody has done before. This is one album in your collection that you can't say is similar to much else.

Lou, who loved to challenge and frighten the people's expectations partners with some fierce hard rock. Lour Reed really had a different interpretation to "frightening us" than hard rock players do. Combining these two interpretations gives quite a unique performance. Would not be surprised if this album survived through the decades to be something valued by the future music culture. Similar to The Velvet Underground & Nico not being particularly popular at it's time of release, if you don't like the sound of this album keep trying until you begin to understand what they were trying to do.

I applaud their effort to venture into different territory as the evolution of their studio albums comes to a halt.

Having played together before and familiarity with Reeds back catalogue makes this collaboration unsurprising.

Based on two tragic plays in a similar territory to Reeds Berlin album, the cover of Lulu promises this will not be an easy listen.

Brandenburg Gate begins gently and acoustic before Metallica crash in for a mid pace thrash around. Pumping Blood introduces a string section contributing drones to compete with the guitars.

Beyond this point Lulu consists of varying tempos, elongated musical interludes (warning may contain jamming and noodling) and thrash with Reeds usual deadpan vocals and James Hetfieldoccasionally adding raspy backing.

At one point it sounds like Lars Ulrich is so bored that every once in a while he throws a drum down the stairs to see what happens.

As with all double albums a bit of pruning and editing would create a very good album, Junior Dad for example requires the removal of flab.

Placed firmly between The Velvet Undergrounds White Light/White Heat album, Like A Possum (from Reeds Ecstasy) and Metal Machine Music with a Berlin like narrative this is not an album you'd return to often......if at all. This is art writ large and is arguably a fitting coda to Reeds career, he wasn't bothered if people like this album or not. Whether it is the death knell for Metallicaremains to be seen (recent events over their Glastonbury appearance show they have have a mountain sized public relations mountain to climb that makes the Napster controversy look like small fry). Definately not the place to start for anyone interested in either artist. Approach with caution.

Lou Reed does his thing while metallica plays softly in the background. Worst cd ever made.
Probably more appreciated by Lou Reed fans, definetly not for Metal(lica) fans!

Hooray for the CD of the year......because it sure as shit ain't this one. It's horrendous enough that this is just plain, nausea-inducing, left-arm-numbing, bad. It's worse than that, though. They weren't happy just to cram all this weird, foolish, foulness on a single CD. Oh, no. Those sick bastards had to get all cute and spread it out over TWO of them. And that's a slap in the face if there ever was one. Even the almost, ALMOST equally brutal, "St. Anger", was limited to one CD. The profoundly confusing, "Load" and "Reload", were basically one album but were released a couple years apart....each on one CD. This should be on no CDs. This album should exist only in the most out of reach location known to mankind so that no human, no matter how vile and deserving of bad, evil, ill-conceived music, could ever possibly get it in their grubby mitts and play the thing.

I don't like this album. No one in my house likes this album. My wife made me watch, "The Notebook", with her for making her hear it. The next night she went out and got drunk with her friends at some Chippendales type place. That was her revenge and I'm fortunate it was relatively mild. My friends all hate this album and now they all laugh at me for being such a sucker and dropping ten bucks on it. They told me that I should have just downloaded it illegally and I should have. There's a laundry list of all the people who no longer feel I have any credibility when it comes to selecting cool music. There's no redemption in hating it either; I actually bought it and that makes me an idiot now.

I finally decided to throw it out and put it out with the trash for pick-up on a Monday morning not too long ago. When I came home from work that evening, I went to the bottom of the driveway to retrieve the empty receptacles. Inside one of them was this album and a note advising me that I needed to make special arrangements in order to dispose of certain types of waste. On the back was a full list and someone had written, "Lulu CD", at the very bottom. So I took the discs and got back in my car and drove off into the night, and eventually threw them out the window as I went over a creek a couple miles from my subdivision. By Thursday evening, they were waiting for me in the mailbox with the mail. I have tried other methods of getting rid of them as well. The last one - and the one which I thought would work best, was to take them into a local used CD store and just leave it there on one of the racks. I thought, "How could that possibly go wrong?" Somehow, it did. As I was leaving the store, the alarm went off like I was leaving without paying for something. The owner darted across the store, past the CD rack I left it in, quickly grabbed it and aggressively shoved it into my chest. "Don't you ever try to dump something like THIS in my store again!!!"

So where are they now? Bottom of the catbox. Safest damn place they could ever possibly be, too.

Seriously, there isn't a single note on this entire release that doesn't make me cringe like I'm constipated. Some things are so bad they actually end up being funny. Not this. Metallica makes themselves look and sound like total idiots for doing this. Lou Reed looks like an idiot for doing this. Zero redeeming qualities, zero moments that bring a smile to the listener's face - unless they happen to be completely insane. This is by far the worst album I have heard in all of 2011, and in the top ten personal worst of all-time, right up there with none other than, "St. Anger". It's literally so bad, it has to be a joke. There has to be someone, somewhere, who is laughing hysterically about this album's existence.

Reading all the reviews, spitting right at the face of a poor dismembered doll, it makes wonder how bad "Lulu" might really sound. Well, for most part, it will be remembered as one of the most boring experiment attempts between the two - at first hint - irreconcilable entities. Personally, I have divided feelings for both these entities. None of them neither irritate nor intrigue - they simply are there somewhere. And their results are just as mixed. It's funny how many already proclaimed "Lulu" "the worst" or "one of the worst" whatever-albums in history of mankind. Just because most press say so, it shouldn't scare you off opening "Loutallica's" Pandora's box and find out about it yourself. For some perversely strange reason, "Lulu" makes me laugh uncontrollably. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. And it features Metallica in one of their most romantically morbid record sleeves... Thanks to Lou.
