Having heard many years back that 'our darkness' was probably the inspiration behind the KLF's what time is love, I kept a look out for that 12" (ink 125), early 2000's eventually found a decent copy along with sleeper in metropolis and purchased. Hmmm... i thought, a very tenuous link, really couldnt hear that inspiration, although I liked the track nonetheless. Having picked up this lp a few weeks back, now i hear it! Much prefer this lp version of our darkness. Rest of the lp? I agree with reviewer below, a tough but rewarding listen.referencing Joined Up Writing (LP, Mini-Album) MINK 5
I don't think I would have said this a few years ago (it seemed like a record I would never listen to again), but some tracks sound pretty good and this release is very up to date by today's standards.
Clearly not a record for saturday mornings or one to spin at parties, lol, but definitely a deep spin if you are in the right mood or want a time capsule from the (dark side of the) eighties.. it's hard to imagine today that at the time, Our Darkness was a hit on the radio and played in clubs all over Europe. It's also amazing that after 40 years we are now in a period even darker than at the time.
I stil have the 12" of that title, which sounds louder (and maybe better) than the version on this LP, and it was the main reason why I bought that LP at the time. In fact the hit title Our Darknes is burried at the end of side B, and it's pretty clear that while it retains its synth rhytmic appeal, it was not the best track on this mini-LP. The other tracks are in fact more mature, sound deeper, and, in a way, have stood the test of time better than the hit single.
Sound quality is in fact good to very good on this release, which I had forgotten about — and missed at the time because the words seemed more important than the music, but it's still a pretty good listen, especially in today's depressing world.
Anyway, an interesting and mindful listen if you are in the right mood.
Note — my comment refers to the UK first press on Ink. The cassette version also sounded pretty good, and maybe even better, IIRC.referencing Joined Up Writing (LP, Mini-Album) MINK 5
