Neil Young – American Stars 'N Bars

Not a great pressing - highs are muffled & distorted more than normal for Neil; specifically on the vocals. My copy even has the bass/lows off in the distance

My copy has Side A and Side B labels inverted.

Nobody mentions this album when discussing Young’s best albums. They should. Side B is an absolute beast. From the softer acoustic stuff similar to Harvest to Like a Hurricane which telegraphs early grunge sound. This album is actually historically important. I haven’t heard many pressings but this one is clear, and punchy without being muddy. Listen for the subtlety of Will To Love. Great Album

ok, now let me say that i an definitely Not a fan of remastered LPs. i tend to avoid them at all costs. i always prefer the original analog mixes/masters that were done at the time as opposed to some revisionist master done in the digital realm that is usually many many generations removed from what the artist originally intended.

but, you know what? this specific remaster absolutely kicks the ass of the original pressing out the door. both sound deep and full and have similar midrange punch that hits you square in the chest at high volume. the difference is in the stereo presence and the high end. maybe its because Mr Young and his personal sound engineer have suffered high end hearing loss over all the years of loud sessions and gigs, and they are compensating for that in the mix. but this pressing has an incredible razor sharp clarity and a bigger stereo separation that just isnt in the mix of the original version. and as a result, it sounds like you are in the mixing room hearing Crazy Horse rocking out right before your eyes and ears in a way that i just havent heard before. its really a night and day difference, and i cant recommend this remaster enough.

man, im begrudgingly going to keep the 1977 pressing in my collection to err on the side of analog preservation, but do yourself a favor and get this remaster, you wont be disappointed. its that Good. nah...Its Fantastic!!!

My copy is nearly flat, nearly perfectly centered, quiet, and sounds terrific. These reissues have the edge over the originals, sounding more alive and "in the room."

Excellent pressing, great cut by CB and sounds awesome! Crystal clear electric guitar. Packaging is reproduced completely

I have the same version here, except of the price code on the cover is written for France: WE 341 instead of WE 321
