I thought this record sounds good. My usual complaints for this kind of release however - it's a pretty unremarkable reissue... no a gatefold, no extra b-side tracks, no liner notes, no additional artwork... you've seen it all before... Something with some extra love and thought could have made this release a must-have for fans. Don't get me wrong, this is worth owning for the music, but not because this release is at all special.

This is a great pressing. Jazz instrumentals come through clean on my hifi system. I come back to this pressing often. Mad love to GetonDown for re-issuing underground cult classics, that no other label touches.

This is an excellent 2-disc deluxe version of what is (in)arguably one of the greatest hip-hop albums ever made. I owned this on cassette back in the day, which included "The Creator" (Slide To The Side Mix - Radio Edit) and "Mecca & The Soul Brother." [Although "Mecca" was labeled "Remix" on the cassette, I'm pretty sure it was the same mix as what was on the EP. It's been years since I had the tape, but I played the heck out of it, and the "Wig Out Mix" doesn't sound like what I remember.] While it would've been nice if the two cassette bonus tracks were included, Traffic did put these mixes on the 2014 expanded version of All Souled Out, and they're from the master tapes on that disc.

Now, for the minor disappointment in the deluxe version, several of the bonus tracks on disc 2 are taken from vinyl or mp3. The vinyl transfers don't sound bad by any means, but still, it's disappointing the tapes could not be located. Here's a track-by-track breakdown on which songs come from vinyl:

1. It's Not A Game (Vocal) - from the master tape (and why did this not make the original album?!?)
2. Lots Of Lovin' (Remix) - from vinyl, but a nice sounding transfer (fades a little early)
3. They Reminisce (Remix) - from a lossy/mp3 source but sounds decent
4. Straighten It Out (Remix) - also from a lossy/mp3 source
5. They Reminisce (Vibes Mix) - from vinyl, sounds okay but vocals are a little fuzzy
6. It's Not A Game (Instrumental) - from vinyl, but a nice sounding transfer (cuts off the ending abruptly)
7. They Reminisce (Instrumental) - from master tape, sounds excellent
8. The Basement (Instrumental) - from master tape, sounds excellent
9. If It Ain't Rough (Instrumental) - from master tape, sounds excellent
10. Skins (Instrumental) - from master tape, sounds excellent
11. Straighten It Out (Instrumental) - from vinyl; a nice transfer but a little bass-heavy relative to other tracks (fades a little early)
12. They Reminisce (Remix Instrumental) - from vinyl but a nice sounding transfer
13. Ghettos Of The Mind (A Capella) - from the master tape and sounds excellent
14. They Reminisce (A Capella) - from the master tape and sounds excellent
15. The Basement (A Capella) - from the masteer tape and sounds excellent

Does this pressing actually have the remixes of The Creator & Mecca and the Soul Brother like the 2016 MOV pressing, or does it have the original All Souled Out versions like the original pressing?

How does this compare to the MOV pressing? Thank you.

Top notch DMM pressing of this classic record. This album changed my life when it dropped, so I look at this one with critical eyes.

Mecca & The Soul Brother was remastered in 2010 for the Box Set Deluxe Edition . The box set is a definitive capsule of their work during this project. incredible and is worth getting. Most of the vinyl releases between 2010-2020 use these remastered files as their source. So, when you're looking at the best reissue from this period, the pressing should particularly be the deciding factor. Comparing to the Get On Down release, I prefer this one. The GoD version isn't bad by any means, but the MOV is a little more punchy, clean, and zero surface noise. Probably things that you wouldnt pickup without A/B testing, but there are noticeable differences in those details. I'm unclear right now where the Get On Down version was pressed, but typically they use United which is problematic, especially given the choice to use clear vinyl. (Side note: At this point I'm skeptical of any clear vinyl unless it's pressed at Pallas in Germany). MOV in-house pressings of DMM are usually crisp and this is no exception. Nice black polylined sleeves; perfectly manufactured. If you haven't bought a copy yet and are deciding between the 2 reissues then it's worth the effort to get the MOV pressing.

One final critical factor that makes these reissues a must have is that they are more complete than original versions and repressing. Previous versions of the vinyl included Mecca And The Soul Brother and The Creator as extra tracks C4 and D1. A nice addition, but although these were originally labeled as the "Remix" versions of each, they were actually still the original cuts from the All Souled Out EP. The tracks are excellent and I even prefer the Creator over the Creator Remix side-by-side..... but neither really fit the production of this LP. They def are better suited for the EP and share that same production vibe. When playing the original LP they stuck out and always felt like bonus tracks crammed on there. Now here the remastered cut replaces the originals with the Remix versions. I have to believe this was the original intent all along as they sound so smoooth here with the rest of the album. It's the kind of detailed decisions that elevates this reissue above the original vinyl pressing as well as the original CD pressing.

Highly recommended. A rare occasion where you could not ask for anything else in a reissue. Pick this one up along with the CD Box Set.

This is the only pressing I’ve heard. But, it sounds fantastic! Everything is balanced and the crackles etc that you hear are part of the original samples! Highly recommended :)

Very low output level on side A for me. Even with gain to max on my mixer the levels never reach the red.
