- Take A Message To Mary, Poor Jenny, ('Til) I Kissed You, Oh What A Feeling, Let It Be Me, Like Strangers, and When Will I Be Loved are all true stereo here and sound incredible. An absolutely stunning sounding record, with unbelievable low end and overall clarity. Another example of the brilliant, trailblazing work of Bill Porter behind the board.
- My copy, Cadence mono 1960, has 'Side 1' at the bottom of the 3-line label info that is to the right of the hole, unlike the versions listed here. Dead wax: L9OP - 2201 △2561, (sd2) L9OP - 2202 △2561 - x
- Edited 10 years agoThe Everly Brothers could certainly rock, at least on their earlier records. But they fell more in to the pop realm in the sixties. And in this genre, Don and Phil excelled. Many of these songs are beautiful, and I personally feel that the duo owns the song 'Let It Be Me'. 'When Will I Be Loved' is a perfect pop song, a la 'Cathy's Clown'.
Their version of Gene Vincent's 'Be Bop A-Lula' is way too tame to my ear, but that classic rock and roll song probably shouldn't be touched....not even by Sir Paul McCartney. And 'Rip It Up' has very little of the excitement of the Little Richard version.
Everly Brothers' great songs seem to involve good old teenage guilt. 'Wake Up Little Suzie' may have seemed like a nightmare back in the day. 'Poor Jenny' has a wonderful comic lyric mixed with regret. One of their best songs.
