Reviews
- FROM DETROIT TO ST GERMAIN serves as an overview of his works on FNAC and F Communications, before his shift to Blue Note. This limited 2-disc edition features his biggest hits of his blue-sampling deep house, including numerous cuts from his BOULEVARD album. That alone would have justified this collection, but a number of tracks from his harder-to-find EPs also find some representation. And while some of the house-based tracks are as equally well-known (“Alabama Blues,” “Walk So Lonely,” “My Mama Said”), his earlier tech-based efforts also make an appearance, like the spare disco-tech of “The First Time,” the sweet tech-house of “French” and “Move” or the simple electro groove of “Jack on the Groove.” Not all of them hit, of course, but for ever track that seems dated, you also get more timeless works, like the smooth drift of “IL” or the Latin-inflections on “Percussion” and “Soul Salsa Soul.” Not surprisingly, the collection ends with the acid drift of “Modus Vivendi,” one of his earliest aliases, bringing his time at F Communications to an end right where it began.
