Substance was the first widely released New Order compilation. Issued as a 12-track double LP, a 12-, 24- or 28-track double cassette, a 24-track double CD, and a 24-track double DAT, the compilation featured original 12" singles and B-sides, with a few exceptions.
“Ceremony” is the 1981 re-recorded version with Gillian Gilbert, “Temptation” and “Confusion” are May 1987 re-recordings, and “Subculture”, “Shellshock”, and “Hurt” are edited versions; CD and DAT copies additionally contain an edited version of "The Perfect Kiss" that fades out 44 seconds early. These alterations were implemented due to storage limitations of physical media in 1987, and have remained in place on reissues.
Additionally, all of the 24- or 28-track editions confuse the song titles “Cries and Whispers” and “Mesh” (owing to the tracks being improperly ordered on the rear sleeve for the 12" release of "Everything's Gone Green" in 1981), misname "The Perfect Kiss" and "Sub-Culture" "Perfect Kiss" and "Subculture" (respectively), and place A-sides "Procession" and "Murder" on the second CD/DAT, which is otherwise relegated to B-sides; the latter anomaly is not present on cassette copies.

Show All 83 Reviews- My #1 complaint about this compilation on both CD and LP is the awful mastering. The volume is kept low and you have to crank up the amp in order to feel it. If you can get the original 12” singles, preferably UK, you’ll enjoy the music much more. I don’t hold much hope for a vinyl reissue. The songs were remastered for CD (except for a couple such as “Confusion”) and released on some of the remastered albums on a 2nd bonus tracks CDs. Easier and cheaper to pursue these songs without paying through the nose.
- Incredible sound. Rich bass and detailed keyboards. Get a copy if you can.
- The sound of this pressing is amazingly good. I was surprised when I compared this to the UK 1987 pressing I have and this German copy actually trumps in terms of clarity and is punchy AF.
- Looking at fishboybilly's comment below. Perhaps the 451 includes the other "varieties" of this boot? Agree tho' just because it says 300 pressed, doesn't necessarily mean it's true..Even legit record Co's in the past are known to have pressed up "overuns" of popular LP's/12" records...most probably for reps to persuede stores to take "promo" giveaways, that were then sold..It's a dirty business...
