Notes

New Order's 20th single, released May 1990. Produced by Stephen Hague.
Their only UK number 1 single.
Their last single on Factory.

The song was produced for England's 1990 FIFA World Cup campaign, and features several members of the English squad (i.e. shouting "Express Yourself") and John Barnes (2) doing the rap. Comedian Keith Allen co-wrote the lyrics and is also featured. The single was issued on two separate 12" singles, where the second contains remixes by Graeme Park, Mike Pickering, Andrew Weatherall and Terry Farley.

This MR includes World In Motion Remix releases and the 2002 reissue.

If you ever see this, pay for it and run. It's the only version that has the Carabinieri Mix on CD, and is the best version of this song.

Fantastic mixes, really; all of them have their merits...and drawbacks. Side B first: On the Detroit-meets-Haçienda Subbuteo mixes (love the reference to the table football game "Subbuteo"!), the big fat dub/house synth bassline sounds are genius, particularly the variation used in the Dub version — though those cheap handclaps Park and Pickering employ occasionally are a bit daft — it sounded dated to me almost immediately, even back then. The freshened chords and melodic treatment of those two mixes give the track a deeper, more nocturnal feel than the standard single version, and the bright chirpiness of the original's vocals really benefit from the contrast. It gives the whole thing a much sturdier and more interesting foundation. It's really too bad those vocals are so ridiculous...New Order, Keith, and the England team at their daffiest and most, er, cartoony. It would've benefited from further versions with the vocals stripped out and/or cut up hugely. They're just so distracting from what's happening underneath (and yes, I know, it's a football anthem, the chanting is the point...but surely they could've added an a cappella track to the 12" so DJs could layer the vocals in as needed?) As for Side A, the Boys Own mixes, the choppy percussive typewriter rhythms in the Carabinieri and No Alla Violenza mixes are mostly nice, typical early-90s Weatherall/Farley goodness. Still, those two seem a bit restrained here, like they weren't really getting as radical with the revamping as they usually would.

This 12" is unusual in that it simply duplicates the tracks from the 7" equivalent. No extended versions, no remixes, no bonus tracks. The music is great though, as once again New Order prove themselves one of the great pop (yes, pop) groups of the 80s/90s. It's also worth flipping the disc over to take a listen to "The B Side", actually their first attempt to record the A-side, with Roli Mosimann (rather than Stephen Hague) on production duties.

Incidentally, this was the last New Order release on Factory (well, the remix 12" was) and Factory's only UK number one hit.

This was a first on many levels. The first New Order single of the new decade, the first between album New Order single in quite some time and the first good England World Cup anthem in quite some time as well.

While there may be some dodgy bits, this single really signalled the direction New Order could have gone in, had they not gone their seperate ways for 3 years.

                      Great single overall.
