As is now known, when the legendary Can studio in Weilerswist was sold to the German Rock N Pop Museum, they bought everything, including the army mattresses that covered the walls for sound protection and relocated it to Gronau. Whilst dismantling the studio, master tapes were found and stored in the Spoon archive. With barely legible labeling, no one was sure what was on these until Irmin Schmidt and long time collaborator Jono Podmore started to go through over 50 hours of music. What they found was years of archived material, not outtakes, but rather full tracks that have been shelved for a variety of reasons. These included soundtracks to films that were never released and tracks that didn't make it onto the final versions of albums due to space. The final cut of tracks, dating from 1968-1977, features studio material recorded at Schloss Norvenich and Can Studio, Weilerswist with the Can line-up of Holger Czukay, Michael Karoli, Jaki Liebezeit, Irmin Schmidt and vocals by Malcolm Mooney or Damo Suzuki. Can's influence is well known and far-reaching and the impact they made on music is felt today as keenly as it ever has been.

The Lost Tapes was curated by Irmin Schmidt and Daniel Miller and includes a 28 page booklet with sleeve notes. Highest recommendation!

This box set is still available from Can's official website, along with a condensed 10" version. It's about $90 plus $27 shipping to the USA. So, no need to pay more than $130 for it.

Five years after its release this Can box just gets better and better. Lots of deep listening, I keep turning up new things to listen to and delight in. Great for hardcore Canheads. The Malcolm Mooney tracks showcase just how out-there he was, using his voice akin to a sampler or tape loop, just press 'repeat'. Virtually every track in the set sheds new light on the Can back catalogue with proto versions of Can classics, for instance - Vitamin C (Dead Pigeon Suite) and Mother Sky (On the Way To....).
The live tracks are good too and seem to be better quality than some other live releases I've heard (like the CD that came with the Can Box which I was never that impressed by).
Niggles are tiny - I might not have put on Godzilla Frgment which is too short and truncated to be of much interest. Apart from that this is all great stuff.

During Track 2 "Waiting For The Streetcar", Malcolm Mooney sings the phrase "Waiting For The Streetcar" 170 times.

just a brilliant box set. its taken me a while to really listen to this and get familiar, but now after 2-3 listens I'd rate up there with the Can's best stuff.

Absolutely ESSENTIAL in any form for any serious Can fan.

Love the concept, love the packaging, love the music.

It all passes way too quickly, I wish it had been at least a 5-disc set.

Too many highlights to mention - there's simply no point describing the music as anyone who loves Can will love this, without fail.

For hardcore Can fans this is a treasure trove - for everybody else get the first six albums first.

This sounds unbelievably good on vinyl. The lps are pressed thick and are loud. The packaging is incredible. Easy to get lost in.

I love Can! But I am always fascinated that people from record company (mayby group itself) after of a long pause collect hardened leftovers after dinner, nicely wrap and served again.... for some baksheesh of course... legend is legend
