referencing Special Offer (7", 45 RPM, Single) STOP 004
One of those records where the sleeve in no way represents what's actually on offer.
Take one look at this sleeve and you don't honestly know what to expect. It's got a definite vibe of those 70s "Top Of The Pops" budget compilations (nice handing of the polo stick etc etc), but the giveaway thing that all-is-not-as-it-appears is a tiny illustrated robot beside the model's head.
So pop the record on an immediately you are hit with ultra cool synths and an electro vocoder. The singer does as well as she can (don't expect Donna Summer). Rhythmically it's quite funky but owes a lot overall to the late 70s Space Disco sound.
So yeah, if ever there was a case of "don't judge a book by its cover", this is it.
On the b-side is Lesson In Love. I was intrigued at first to think what this would be (with half of me dreading a shitty ballad). In fact it's worse than that. It's an instrumental version of Special Offer.
Now, that would be amazing I agree. However, in place of the nice inoffensive female vocals is a big WASSUP GUYZZZ!!! squaking saxophone.
Anyone from the UK over the age of 40, for reference think of those 80's ads for Bodyform.
