- Edited 3 years agoKing Of Snake is the second strongest single from Beaucoup Fish, (with Jumbo taking first spot.)
Original credits for this track omitted songwriting nods to Donna Summer & Giorgio Moroder for the obvious 'I Feel Love' inspired bassline, but subsequent Beaucoup Fish releases recognise this.
The sped-up disco bassline, piano stabs and possessed Karl Hyde shouting make the original a real peaktime-only track. Can be difficult to play this in a set that isn't 135+bpm, and fairly high energy.
The Ashley Beedle mix has slightly less urgency to it and dials back the manic feel of the original somewhat, but keeps the groove and pace up. Not too far a departure from the original.
The Fatboy Slim mix is in my opinion, one of his best. True to that era of Norman Cook's remixing, it's big-beat bonkers. With chopped-up samples of the original, snapping breakbeat and finally a booming acid techno finish, it's got all the stops pulled out.
The Slam remix didn't do a lot for me. It feels like a run-of-the-mill backing track they had laying around that Karl Hyde's vocal got slapped over. I'm sure this wasn't the case - but I must say I've never really *got* Slam, although I know they're revered in some circles.
All-in-all, a pretty solid package with the highlight being the Fatboy Slim mix and the original.
Also, my copy has D side label on both sides of 2nd record. - Edited 4 months agoAshley Beedle sorts out a rework that rocks the Moroder bassline to the fullest, extending the track and just keeping that driving vibe.
Dave Clarke however delivers a very, very funky techno workout which works the piano along with a subby bass in the first half. Making it perfect to mix into with some faster funkier house cuts. But ol' Clarkey flips the script after the second drop. Where he brings in a darker breakdown and break out some of the lyrics to set the mood. Then you hear it coming in out that big haze of bass, that infectious Moroder bassline.
Can't say enough good things about Clarke's remix, it works every time and is one of Clarky's best remixes. referencing King Of Snake (Coccoluto Remix & Fatboy Slim Rmx) (CD, Maxi-Single, Enhanced, Stereo) JBO5010853
A track that when first I first heard at Glatonbury thought was amazing. Upon hearing the recorded versions I feel it was an opportunity wasted especially the remixes which are nothing short of uninspired.- A new Underworld classic, "King of Snake" comes correct with two mixes. The first, group member Rick Smith adds his take to the track, adding a bit of quirky funky-ness. Flip for Dave Clarke's spot on, driving beat mix. Great stuff all around.
