For the Roses Review by David Cleary
On For the Roses, Joni Mitchell began to explore jazz and other influences in earnest. As one might expect from a transitional album, there is a lot of stylistic ground explored, including straight folk selections using guitar ("For the Roses") and piano ("Banquet," "See You Sometime," "Lesson in Survival") overtly jazzy numbers ("Barangrill," "Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire," and hybrids that cross the two "Let the Wind Carry Me," "Electricity," "Woman of Heart and Mind," "Judgment of the Moon and Stars"). "Blonde in the Bleachers" grafts a rock & roll band coda onto a piano-based singer/songwriter main body. The hit single "You Turn Me on I'm a Radio" is an unusual essay into country-tinged pop, sporting a Dylanesque harmonica solo played by Graham Nash and lush backing vocals. Arrangements here build solidly upon the tentative expansion of scoring first seen in Ladies of the Canyon. "Judgment of the Moon and Stars" and "Let the Wind Carry Me" present lengthy instrumental interludes. The lyrics here are among Mitchell's best, continuing in the vein of gripping honesty and heartfelt depth exhibited on Blue. As always, there are selections about relationship problems, such as "Lesson in Survival," "See You Sometime," and perhaps the best of all her songs in this genre, "Woman of Heart and Mind." "Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire" presents a gritty inner-city survival scene, while "Barangrill" winsomely extols the uncomplicated virtues of a roadside truck stop. More than a bridge between great albums, this excellent disc is a top-notch listen in its own right.

Great recording of a very underrated album. Also the original three part sleeve is a work of art - literally ! Highly recommended,

Great music of course and remastered by the great Bernie Grundman but unfortunate this recent Joni Mitchell pressing is so very disappointing as it is full of disturbing cracks, etc., even after 2 thorough Degritter washes!
Incomprehensible to put this on the market.

I can't be the first one to notice that the gatefold opens like a flower/rose/labia.

Once upon at time, Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno played the Hulk on TV. In one episode, Bixby/Banner got stuck in a middle-transformation: Green skin, no muscles, no power, but full rational human awareness. He spent the rest of the episode trying to hide, waiting to return to normal. Or become the full-on Hulk.

For The Roses is Mitchell's version of that demimonde. She's poised between the folkiness of Blue and earlier albums and the out-right jazz moves of Court And Spark and the 4 albums after it.

Classic Joni. Maybe she was always in full-on Hulk mode.

Stunning sound. Pin drop quiet vinyl. Not a single tiny tick across either side. Masterpiece!!!

This an excellent re-release mastered by Bernie Grundman, the uni pack jacket is nicely reproduced and a lined inner sleeve is provided. The pressing is quiet and sound is very organic and natural. Definitely worth picking up if you're a fan of Joni's early 70s period.

I have all early albums pressed in Canada. They all sound excellent. Most pressings from Canada from a good master sound great. Remember the number pressed tend to be significantly smaller batches than the USA or UK and they are hard to come by in good condition. All of mine are VG+ and I am proud owner. Love Joni!

I just ordered my copy this morning. When I first heard the richness of the recording, I knew I had to hear it on original, first edition vinyl. But for this one to stand out like it did. It literally reached out and grabbed my attention this morning.........

I'm always on the hunt for vintage vinyl that has that kind of an impact in sound. Anyone have any other albums from this incredible era that you can think of that literally left you floored, in terms of sound, when you first heard it on headphones? (I'm looking for more suggestions.)

This first US pressing is the best of all available pressings, particularly if you have a minty copy. Perfect presence, sound stage, clarity. It's like Joni's singing in your ear. I also have the UK first pressing which is impressive, but just a notch below this one.
