Notes
Released on 15 June 1979.
Initial run of 10,000 copies was housed in a textured cover, pressed by the WEA pressing plant in West Drayton and sold until October 1979. Another 10,000 copies were pressed at the Pye pressing plant Tranco and sold until Mid 1980. Some of the Tranco pressings were pressed using vinyl that was translucent red when held up to the light. Reissued / repressed again in July 1980 (so that until July 1981, 77.523 copies were pressed in total). Later confirmed represses from 1981 and 1984. The third and final mastered edition on Factory was done at Townhouse somewhere early 80s.
Peaked at # 71 in the UK Album Charts in August 1980.
Recorded in April 1979 at Strawberry Studios, Stockport. Also recorded during these sessions were the tracks "Autosuggestion" and "From Safety To Where...?" (both released on Earcom 2) as well as "Exercise One", "The Only Mistake", "Walked In Line" and "The Kill" (all later released on Still).
Outside is side A and Inside is side B. This however got mixed up by the pressing plant, assigning Outside = B and Inside = A in the runouts.
The centre sleeve depicts "100 consecutive pulses from the pulsar CP 1919", taken from an image that Bernard Sumner found in 'The Cambridge Encyclopaedia of Astronomy' (page 111, 1977 edition), which was a reproduction of a visualization created by Harold D. Craft, Jr., for his dissertation “Radio Observations of the Pulse Profiles and Dispersion Measures of Twelve Pulsars,” (September 1970).

Reviews
- Sounds great to me and is a fantastic album. The texturing felt pretty authentic compared to a early pressing at the record shop. It was also a fantastic price.
- This is a good sounding reissue. Nothing exceptional but definitely nothing close to”sounding compressed to death,” or “lifeless.” I believe these comments are coming from super fans who are just frustrated that the record didn’t sound like their other amazing sounding records (which is totally fair). I am a pretty casual fan and from that perspective, this is an above average sounding modern reissue. Compressed to death are reissues like Linkin Park’s earlier catalogue (not the recent one step).
While this very affordable reissue is above average in terms of sound quality relative to other modern reissues, I do agree that compression has taken out some of the beautiful dynamics, haunting space between vocal and the instruments and the overall atmospheric element of the album. It is not as immersive as it should be. The best analogy I can give is Radiohead - OK Computer. Most of the modern reissues of OK Computer don’t come close to the original vinyl in terms of dynamic range and fullness of the sound.
However, I am okay to live with this since getting a vintage copy of this record in a good condition is quite difficult and the price to be paid for such a copy is really expensive especially for a casual fan like myself.
The bass and drums cut through quite well (due to the compression) and the stereo panning throughout the record is nicely separated. Lower frequencies were EQ’d a bit weirdly but still it doesn’t make me feel like my ears were muffled/blocked with wool like some other bass boosted reissues (a lot of Beatles Giles Martin Remixes).
The cover reproduction is amazing. The texture and the print quality is top notch. For the price, this definitely deserves a space in my growing collection.

- I have a Near Mint Condition Copy of this Album White Vinyl, Brazilian, No spelling mistake on my Cover though spelled Correctly. If interested please email me at [email protected] my name is Grant
- I have never heard any other vinyl versions of this but I can confidently say that this Porky Prime Cut is prime indeed!
- Bought mine from a local record store for €25ish in VG Condition. It sounds superb and really punchy! Probably the best sounding record currently in my collection!
