referencing Get Your Kicks (LP, Album, Stereo) MRLP 3002
Get Your Kicks is the first album that Fancy released. It was released in 1985 on metronome records and contains 8-9 tracks, depending on the record label. The album released on Fancy's then German record label Metronome had 8 tracks, while the release on the Danish Mega records had 9 tracks.
The song order is also a little bit different on the Mega Records this release from the Metronome release and also on the Metronome release you have the extended version of "Slice Me Nice" and Chines Eyes, while on the mega release it’s the 7" versions.
The album is kind of a concept album in a way. Most of the tracks have lyrics that refers to getting your kick, party/having fun
BDSM kind of stuff and other ways to get your kicks (maybe even drugs).
So in a way I will say that it is a concept album.
"Chines Eyes" - The songs starts of with a fat growling synth playing 3 notes followed by a glass smashing sound and then a little clap/snare fill, before the songs hit in with a fat 80’s synth bass, kick drum snare, a clap, hats. I think the song is about either drugs, BDSM or both. It’s a very catchy synth pop song, with a pumping beat and a catchy refrain and after the second refrain it breaks out into a kid of B-section fill, with tom fills and synth lines that comes right at you. Overall, this song is kind of what you get on the album when it comes to the sound. It does not get more mid 80’s synth-pop, italio disco than this. But also lyrically it sticks to the theme of getting your kicks thru the whole album. "Chines Eyes" is one of the stronger songs on the album and a strong opening track that will lure you in to wanting to hear the next songs.
For me this song is a 9/10
"Colder Than Ice" - This song starts of with a soft synth pluck melody that plays for 4 bars, then the hats and an arp melody gently comes in for another 4 bars and then the beat kicks in. This songs is also another synth heavy song. Kind of the same bass sound and pattern as Chinese eyes, but this song is softer if I can put I like that, more ice like. The synth sounds in this song plays well with the «colder than ice» title. The lyrics (as far as I have understood it) is about a woman who is very beautiful and would cast you under her spell, but at the same time she is colder than ice and would break you heart, and that daring to chase her is a thrill. Again, playing on the "get your kicks theme", the song is a good second song, but for me, it’s a little bit weaker than "Chines Eyes" but still a strong song.
For me it is a 7/10
"Get your kicks" - This song is just a catchy - feel good - make me wanna dance kind of song. This song wastes no time, and slams down with what sounds like the «symphony hit» sound fill and then goes straight into the beat with vocals on repeat going «get your kick» and a stab synth melody underneath. Then female vocals comes in singing about love and taking chances as a lead into the first verse. Now as I said, this song is on a more upbeat note and is full of energy. From the lyrics where fancy sings about - "not to be sad just go out and get mad tonight" and "to your kicks in the way it fits you" -, to the synth riffs playing and the octave or off beat bass line. I think this song really was a good choice to use as the album title. It captures the essence of the album. Which is a big energy filled 80’s synth party. This song is one of the high lights on the album for me.
A 10/10
"L.A.D.Y.O." - Not quite sure what L.A.D.Y.O. means, but anyways, this song for me is a instant ear worm. I liked it from the minute I heard it the first time. This song don’t mess around. It goes party full speed ahead and blast you right in the face with the full beat and a groovy synth riff that gets layered for even more in your face energy before the verse kicks in. After every line, the riff comes in as kind of answer line to the lyrics, so this song is high on the energy level. Lyrically Fancy sings about the thrill, kicks and pleasure of being tied up and given pain and how there is no stop when they have started about getting loose in the fire and pleasure. I must say that the extended version of this song is the best one, as it adds a third verse and more groovy instrumental parts. Overall, this song is one of the top songs one the album.
A 10/10 for me
"Get Lost Tonight" - The fifth song on the album. This song starts a little lighter than "L.A.D.Y.O. It start with just the beat going for 4 bars and then the bass and synth comes in. The bass line in this song is again following the same pattern as in "Colder Than Ice" and "Chines Eyes", in that it is following the kick drum. But in this song the bass hangs on one note thru most of the song. And in the verse, this creates a kind of tension that fits with the lyrics that fancy is singing. The lyrics in this song is about being treated like a slave, never being free, being kept in a cage. That there is no escape from this person that is keeping him as a slave. But at the same time he wants it and it get him exited to lose his control and protection.
Again, this song lyrically sticks to the them of getting your kicks and the beat is again full of energy with that pumping beat.
I’ll give this song a 10/10, a top song for me.
"Slice Me Nice" - One of Fancy’s biggest hits. This song is as catchy as the other ones. It starts of with a plucky synth riff and a snare for 4 bars, then the kick drum comes in for 4 bars, then the bass and full beat kick in and you are drag in to the catchiness of the song. The bass plays in a octave pattern under some groovy synth riffs. I have no ide what the lyrics are about in this song, and both verses are the same. But the chorus is catchy as f. Another instant - I wanna dance to - kind of song. For me this song is not in the top. I have always liked the song but it has never been the best on the album for me.
I’ll give this song a 7/10
"Check It Out" - This song is a little bit different than the other ones. It has a more disco feel to it, with brass/synth trumpet stabs, a more groovy disco bass line, more groovy percussion, and instead of just a snare that hits on every second and fourth beat, it has a more rhythmic clap pattern. The song is very upbeat, and in the lyrics Fancy sings about a woman who wants to have a good time and that ha want to take her to desire. This song, like "Get Your Kicks", feature a female joining Fancy in the chorus and also sings solo lines. This is a song that has grown on me. I didn’t like it that much when I first heard it, but now I like it quit well. I still feel that the long version of the song, the one that is on the album, drags it out a little bit. It’s not that I can’t listen to the long version. But I do like the 7" version over the 12" one. So that drags it a little down for me, but still not to bad.
I’ll give it a 7/10
"Blood and Honey" - it is a cover of Amanda Lear and was original released in 1976. This song is the most different track on the album. It’s more scaled down compared to the other high energy synth tracks that are on this album. This is the most disco sounding track on the whole album and that could be because the original is disco. The song starts with a oriental sounding synth playing before the beat kicks in. This song is more lounge, with a laid back bass line, and more organic sounding. Not as synth heavy as the other songs, but still synth. The lyrics are about a beautiful woman who is a devil in disguise. Kind of luring men in for a deadly kiss. Sweet but dangerous. This song has never been my favorite on the album, I like it more today, so it has grown on me, but for me it’s a 6/10
"In shock" - The album ends on this energy filled synth track. Is starts right of into the beat with a octave playing bass line and a kind of screaming pluck synth riff playing. This song is also a lighter synth pop track compared to some of the other songs on the album. But it’s still a energy filled one. In the lyrics, Fancy sings about being out clubbing and just seeing this breath taking person that just turn your world around. This is at least what I take away from it. This song is also one of the weaker songs on the album. It’s not bad, I like it, but it has never been able to grab me like "L.A.D.Y.O" or "Get Your Kicks".
So over all I will give it a 6/10
Then we have the album cover. I think that the album cover works really well. It catches the eye. You se the kind of scattered cover of fancy holding a drink with a beautiful lady by his side. Looking like they are out on the town having good time. Then you have the name Fancy - Get Your Kicks. And you might be thinking «now what is this all about. Why not check it out». I feel The cover fits with the theme of the album and the energy filed songs.
Overall I think this album is a solid first album. It’s not his best album. But it’s far from his worst, and it is a good synth-fest make you. I highly recommend getting a hold of this album if you are a fan of high energy synth music - How to check as Unofficial: See Fancy logo.
