UK Chartography:

This album by Paul McCartney and Wings first charted in the UK’s official music charts in December 1973 (15/12/1973) debuting at the No.45 position. This particular release appeared in the ‘Top 100’ for 103 weeks on its first chart run (15/12/1973 – 29/11/1975). The album had eight further separate chart runs amounting to a grand total of 124 weeks when it has appeared in the UK Top 100 Chart.

The LP became the UK’s official No.1 on 27/07/1974, some 33 weeks after first entering the charts. It remained at the No.1 slot for 7 weeks in all and to date has been Wings’ only No.1 album.

This release of the album has appeared in the UK ‘Top 10’ for 49 weeks and 70 weeks in the ‘Top 40’. After the album’s initial success, its other chart runs were all in the less significant placings within the UK Charts.

However, the ‘Band on the Run’ album was to appear again in the UK Music Charts some years later but as releases under different labels to its original ‘Apple’ and catalogue numbers. Firstly, it was released under the ‘Parlaphone’ label with the catalogue number 4991762 but only appearing for one week in the UK ‘Top 100’ in March 1999 (No.69). This release ‘Band On The Run’ was the ‘25th Anniversary Edition’ on 2xCD.

Its next version, a release on the ‘Concord’ label (cat no. 7232148), had a little more success appearing in the Top 100 for 5 weeks during November – December 2010. On this chart run, the LP’s highest position within the UK Music Charts was No. 17 when it first entered the music charts. This version is found on Discogs here ‘Band On The Run’ and is also in the CD format. (Source: Official Charts Company (UK) (April 2020)).

I bought my -2 -5 copy in 1981 from HMV on Oxford Street. I'm not convinced that any -2 -2 pressed records were still being sold at that time. My -2 -2 copy has the Apple logo on the label and the 3 cut corner inner sleeve indicative of a 1973 pressing.

Once again mention is made of a barcode on the rear cover, but none of the images support that.

This listing states that there is a barcode on the rear sleeve, the images provided do not support that statement!

I have to say, this is a great sounding pressing to my ears. I didn’t expect it to be this good, given that it’s undoubtedly cut from a digital source. But it’s dynamic with a nice soundstage and a quiet surface.

Decided to get this release based on the positive reviews.

Got it super cheap from a reseller. What I got was something that reminded me of the pass the parcel game you'd play when you were younger, and in this particular case, the parent really went for it with the packaging. I honestly wish I recorded my experience of opening this thing because it was seemingly hilariously and concerningly never-ending, much like this description.

And thennnn the dirttttt. Wow. I've never seen so much dirt on a record before. What the hell happened in the 5 years of its existence? The outer cover was in fine condition too which only adds to the mystery. So at this point I was starting to worry. So much for this being a great buy, not much use this being a great pressing if it's this dirty.

But y'know what, after a simple little clean, this sounds absolutely fantastic and puts so many supposedly mint from factory releases I've recently heard to shame.

As others have mentioned, the packaging and poster are good solid quality too.

Gorgeous pressing, heavy vinyl and a nice, thick cardboard jacket! I don’t have any other pressing to compare, but this record sounds DAMN good! Comes with a glossy inner sleeve and a nice poster. Not sure if those DMM EMI 100 pressings sound good, but the “analogue cut from analogue tapes” records in the EMI 100 series are great!

This is my personal choice for best sounding compact disc release. It sparkles and resonates. It would seem that hearing a flat transfer spoils one's ears for any altered editions. It is not what you are used to, it is your senses ascertaining truth.

Those who owned the original UK release will appreciate this original track listing plus the single and b-side as bonus. The sound is quite similar to the 25th anniversary remaster.

Nothing wrong with this release, just that the remaster changes the sound from the original for no particular reason other than because they can. If bonus material is your thing then this is for you.

This pressing is laughably better than the other pressings. Amazing depth, clarity and bass control. Prodigious bass without bloat, not an easy feat. Find someone with a copy and compare for yourself. You'll become a believer too.
