Jodeci – Forever My Lady

Will this one get another repress this year? I hope so!

Just Bought today it is a made in Germany. Such a lucky day for me

Whoever the engineer/technician chiefly responsible for this Netherlands release definitely wanted to prove there were no difference in sound quality between a record and CD as this release sounds exactly like the CD release we bumped back in 1991 meaning it sounds amazing.

Sounds pretty much the same as Diary reissue. Nothing spectacular, but similar to the original presses with less bottom. Compared to original, this reissue is only slightly better. (probably the same master). 2lp's wouldn't make it better unless it is actually remastered.

"Forever My Lady" is an excellent debut from Jodeci. Released only around a month after Boyz II Men's debut album, "Forever My Lady" differentiated itself from its Motown counterpart with church-inspired harmonies, rapping by member Mr. Dalvin, and production from member DeVante Swing and singer/producer Al B. Sure!.

In true New Jack Swing fashion, the quartet switches between seductive ballads and uptempo dance numbers. The biggest draw for "Forever My Lady" is the vocal performance. The lead vocalists/siblings K-Ci and JoJo essentially play tag team on the album; K-Ci's gritty soulman performance is superbly complemented by JoJo's pop-friendly voice. This is especially evident on the ballads "Stay", "Forever My Lady", and "U&I". The excellent harmonies make these tracks even better.

The dance tracks are not quite as strong as the slower songs (while produced well, they don't do very much to stand out from the overabundance of NJS dance tracks at the time), but they are still good nonetheless, again thanks to the vocals. K-Ci's voice in particular lends a welcome sense of urgency in the uptempo tracks "Gotta Love" and "My Phone". Not too different from Alexander O'Neal's collaborations with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

If there is one possible drawback of "Forever My Lady", it is that it's most certainly a product of its time. For all of the keyboard orchestral hits, sequenced drum patterns, and electric piano wizardry featured on "Forever My Lady", one's enjoyment of the album is also dependent on how much they like the New Jack Swing sound. As such, it is an outstanding R&B album, even more so for fans of early 90's R&B and New Jack Swing.

On it's release, this group and album dominated the RnB/Swing Era, what a fantastic debut album. Almost every track a winner, and notoriously played at clubs and Urban Radio Stations. I was fortunate enough to see them perform these tracks at London Hippodrome, on what may have been their one and only UK appearance. ( Could be wrong). Although I have the CD in my reluctantly compiled CD collection, (As was thoroughly disappointed when they started fazing out vinyl therefore, had to start a CD collection), I would love to have a mint ...ok as near as mint condition copy of it on Vinyl. So I agree with Semjon… posted comment May 4 2020 Repress please, as there are customers wanting a copy.
