- Edited one year agoThe track Without Sound contains a sample of the track Love Without Sound from the album White Noise - An Electric Storm. This album is credited as being one of the first to incorporate electronic sounds as one of main instruments courtesy of the incredible Delia Derbyshire. The amount of work and the vision that went into creating those early pieces of electronic music to produce sounds which had not been heard before was absolutely ground-breaking and inspirational. It was good to hear Cyantific & Tactile paying homage to those early experiments with a solid track on this album, although going on what I've heard of previous interviews with Delia, I'm not sure that she would have been a fan of her work being sampled in this way lol.
- Some of these tracks have aged better than others. My faves in 2021 are 'You Don't Have To Run' and 'Without Sound'. I like the other tracks but style wise they don't gel so well with more up to date stuff. A bit of a low point for Hospital here compared to some of their other output around this time. Still an amazing label though!!!
- All I can say is, The Winchester Club is probably the most liquid tune I have ever heard.
Hospital guys played it to death in 2004, then WMC 2 was released in 2005, and now this tune (even this release) is completely forgotten.
I'm probably the biggest Q-Project / Total Science fan out there, I respect them a lot, but Badger Eyes is not something to look out for.
I have to admit, I really like the Friction & Nu Balance (a combo you haven't seen since this remix and their release on Valve around the same time as WMC2) remix of Inside My Soul. It was next level back then.
Concord Dawn track is a filler. I have no idea how side A sounds, can't criticize it in any way.
Visitations is an emotional tune, I'm a little biased because I appreciate Laroque (mainly for Goldfinger on WMC1 and Shock on WildStyle), though I can see why people dislike it. - Edited 17 years agoI was a little disappointed with this LP. I expect a lot from the Hospital boys and usually they deliver, but I didn't get much on this one.
The Inside My Soul remix is probably my pick of the bunch with a funky, soulful sound with a jazzy edge and some beautiful vocals used sparingly and very well. It's a pretty serious tune but it still might make you dance.
Without A Sound and You Don't Have To Run are also good hits, but rather minimal. I rather like their sound and the production quality is top notch, but I just wish there was a little more there.
I had heard a lot about Winchester Club and I was disappointed most with this. It's not a bad tune, but not nearly as good as I had heard it was. I guess my expectations were pumped up just a bit too much. I still might play it out, but It really doesn't match Soul Function by a long shot.
Badger Eyes and Visitations just plain suck. I really don't have anything positive to say about these two. It sounds like Hospital was reaching to make this a 3x12 LP and came up short.
All in all, it's a decent LP. Still quite good in the whole drum&bass scene, but not as good by Hospital standards.
