- “K.B.” is a decent enough new wave / jangle pop tune, and the live “Drill” is very nice. But the real reason to buy this is for the dark, detuned, industrial-ish live version of “Over Theirs.” The album version of this song is meek and fairly forgettable, but it was a psychologically unsettling monster live. It has several strikingly cryptic lyrics such as “Something snaps over the horizon” and “Over and over, just out of reach…” Note that, aside from this single, this live version is only available digitally as a bonus track on CD versions of A Bell Is A Cup…, not on any editions of The Ideal Copy, which contained the aforementioned weak studio version.

Intended as a sendup of “new pop” at its dreariest, “Kidney Bingos” now sounds like one of the genre’s greatest triumphs. Ignore the Dadaist lyrics—a tic of Newman’s since his Harvest years—and focus on the exquisite guitar tone and melody, not to mention the surging coda, which begs to be retooled for the dance floor. Vocally, Newman has never sounded better, even hitting falsetto a few times in a bid to resuscitate Bryan Ferry. Why did this one go unnoticed? Probably timing: ‘88 was the year of Public Enemy and the emergence of house. Also, as with Scritti’s pop moment, the public was likely unaware of what Newman and co. were really up to.
Most poignant moment:
The final lyric is a mondegreen: “Hi! Hello!”Gilbert Lewis croons, but the unsettling deepness of his voice makes it register as, “High… Alone…” - the first song is pretty good. I enjoyed it, nothing like pink flag, haven't heard much of their other stuff though.

72245-0 BLACK vinyl 33 rpm. (not pink) also unlike the UK versions this one spins at the slower 33 rpm. Most of the songs sound great at that speed, but I like to pitch shift Kidney Bingos down about 5%. I'm weird like that.
