At first I figured Phat Kat as Detroit's answer to Recognize Ali or Tame One, then as "Carte Blanche" progressed I recognized the arrogant and fly Detroit accent that I have often heard from the Fat Killahz camp and I was tuned in.
Yes "Danger" is the spell-out-words rhyme scheme that I have heard on many a record and "Nightmare" is another Midwestern rhyme about being against major labels that overlook the region in favor of (at that time) the South, but I've never heard Jay Dee with a club anthem like "Cold Steel" and "Dont Care About Us" can fit in an excellent playlist with The Outlawz classic cut of a similar name off Pac's "Best Of" compilation.
The vocalists (Truth Hurts and Melanie Rutherford) have actual talent and dont sound like they were just put on "Carte Blanche" for an R&B crossover hit. Truth Hurts on "Vessels" especially makes me wonder if true soulful vocalization died in the late 2000's.
"Carte Blanche" may be easy to overlook but it has a surprising amount of bangers and experimental electronic sounds from instrumentalists that I would expect to usually dig in the crates strictly for soul samples.
That alone should be enough to recommend this album to any Hip-Hop head but the way Kat delivers his bars and puts Detroit on his back is nothing short but commendable, even if his topics and concepts tend to retrace patterns other more notable emcees left before him.
