Notes
Brüder Des Schattens - Söhne Des Lichts, in English: "Brothers Of The Shadow - Sons Of Light" - the 10th Popol Vuh album, was also re-branded as the soundtrack to Werner Herzog's "Nosferatu The Vampyre" although only a couple of extracts featured in the movie.

- Well, for the record, having bought the recent Essential Recordings box sets of Popol Vuh, I happened upon this at a record fair. So I'm here listening to a freshly washed original German copy on the Brain label and I'm delighted. Maybe the Japanese one satisfies people more but I'm completely satisfied with this. Rich, full piano. Beautiful acoustic guitar sound. Gorgeous resonances throughout both sides.
Sat in the sweet spot in my leather armchair opposite my vintage Mordaunt Short and Wharfedale Lintons, both pairs on the go. The soundstage on Die Umkehr is immense.
Don't need another copy. Happy with original Brain. - Edited one year agoReplaced my old German pressing with a pristine copy of this one from Japan and boy am I glad I did. The sound is rich and smooth for this, one of the greatest records ever made (IMO). The depth and definition of the ensemble Fricke assembled here is wonderful to behold. BTW, I timed the side-long title track and it is the full 18:49 length version (despite the time listed on the cover). If you love this album do yourself a favor and seek out this version.
- Edited one year agoWonderful sound on this beautiful record - one of many absolutely essential PV recordings. Regarding the confusing history of this record, Florian Fricke states in an interview: "The actual film music, the way it was composed for this movie [Nosferatu], is on the record BRUDER DES SCHATTENS, SOHNE DES LICHTS. And when Werner was already almost finished with his film, he came to me and asked, 'Florian, do you have music to be afraid by?' And so we made a second record, besides BRUDER DES SCHATTENS… we made 'music to be afraid by,' NOSFERATU, part two, released by a French company [EGG]." Material on both of these releases have since appeared together in various iterations (and edits) since then as the complete Nosferatu soundtrack. Confusing and confounding, but this is the nature of the rich Popol Vuh legacy. Somehow it adds to the mystery of the whole of Fricke's output, refusing to be tidy and easily assimilated, leaving the enthralled listener no choice but to surrender. In this reviewers opinion, the material comprising Brüder Des Schattens - Söhne Des Lichts is the superior half, the title track in particular an absolute must in its original extended length. Despite what the cover and label of this first pressing states it clocks in at no less than 18:49 - the most complete version.
- Edited 2 years agoPulled this one back out for spooky season, really incredible record. It has the 17:10 version of Brüder Des Schattens - Söhne Des Lichts, which takes up the whole of Side A. Apparently there's an 18-minute version? This is nonetheless better than the brutally-trimmed 5:45 BMG reissue. I also personally prefer this artwork to that of the Waxwork reissue. I ended up expanding this one with the EGG issue of On The Way To A Little Way, to complete the soundtrack (and enjoy that cover art, too).
However, there is (what I presume to be) a pressing defect between tracks B1 and B2 that results in about 7-8 seconds of static and a dramatic pop. I'm very curious if anyone can comment on this, please let me know! - Pressing quality is just excellent. I purchased an unplayed copy and can confirm that from the first play and on it has just been an amazing experience. Crystalclear and deep as an ocean. Make sure you get a Mint copy. I have been through several german copys and from my point of view they cannot be compared to this, they are much inferior.
