In comparison with so many 12"s from this period, this strangely has a thin and a little brittle sound on my copy. I am wondering whether that is just true of the Canadian pressing of this, and whether there are better and worse pressings of this out there.

Obviously the A-side is one of the best records of the 80’s but don’t sleep on Paint A Rumor. Big Cosmic disco cut with its churning rhythm and eastern melody

8 minutes on the flip of a 7"? For "Paint a rumour"? I shudder to think about the quality. What were they thinking?! Or was it some kind of a statement?

Nonetheless another perfect single from the duo. I joint the queue of those praising the B-side - it really is a marvel of synth production, everything about it pure class and high watermark, and it's not a second too long. Oh, and Annie's restrained style of singing suits the composition just fine, adding overtones that are by turn menacing or hypnotic, even mantraic. But all this praise doesn't mean the A-side is something to sneeze at. OK, it's a well-known big hit (and a richly deserved one at that), but at the same time it's one of the finest songs of the decade, if not ever, and is still able to stop one in the tracks. The fact that Eurythmics were able to drive such cold, dramatic, European songs as this or "Sweet dreams" right to the top of the US charts is a truly singular achievement which should be duly noted.

The 12" adds a live version of "This city never sleeps". I'm a bit indifferent to live renditions in general, but this is a sufficiently different interpretation of the song. It veers into gospel territory which I find ill-suited - the song is a lonely rumination, not a communal singalong. But maybe Annie needed to show-off her soul qualities and credentials. It's inessential but nice, and at the very least you can be transported to the Eurythmics live show for five minutes. In fact it's the 12" you need to get the main two songs in their bestest quality, so a bit of a live experience may even be a welcome respite (depending on a mood).

Tone is harsh and cold, especially the strings accompaniment. Detail is ok. Great song!

Two epic songs, among Eurythmics' best. A title track longer than the LP version. 8 minutes of audio on the flip. Iconic picture sleeve. This is how you do it.

[edit:] Unfortunately, all that music crammed onto a 45 means low volume levels, high noise, and the styrene pressing means low durability. If your copy still plays cleanly, treasure it!

Not all copies have the top 10 US/UK stickers attached

Can someone explain the difference between this pressing and the other pressing? I notice this say "Juke Box" on the label, under Stereo...

classic. a - as - b side. the hit on one hand and then this fantstic b side (which most of the people probably never heard in their life) : First a great live interpretation and directly after (Paint a Rumour) a burner which is totally underrated.

b side of the 12inch (too) is indeed powerful! a side is a classic.

                        I would give the B side of this 7" a 10 out of 5.
