A news article on this release as published on pages 1 & 108 of the 8 Nov 1969 issue of Billboard magazine reads:

Illegal Dylan LP Stirs Sales Storm

NEW YORK - An unauthorized Bob Dylan LP, selling for as high as S12.98, is stirring a sales flurry around the country and in Canada. Columbia Records stepped in late last week to curb the sales of the album, titled "Great White Wonder," with simultaneous legal proceedings in a Federal Court, a California State Court and a Canadian Court against the bootlegger, the manufacturer and the distributor of the record. Notice to retailers who are selling the recording has been issued by Columbia advising them that unless the record is withdrawn from sale, appropriate legal action will also be brought against them individually.

The unauthorized album, which originated on the West Coast, is reported to be potpourri of tapes made in Dylan's cellar in Woodstock, N.Y., concerts and broadcasts. The LP is packaged in a blank white wrapping and is easily distinguished from a genuine Columbia album because there is no label copy on the record. However, Columbia has received numerous complaints from consumers about the poor quality of recording which they believe to be a regular Columbia album.

In New York, Ben Karol of King Karol said he had been approached by a young salesman to carry the "Great White Wonder" album on a cash-on-delivery basis but he had declined. He said he had heard the album was being sold in Greenwich Village, but had become scarce even there. Other leading dealers here also said they were not stocking the record.

Sales on Coast

Los Angeles has had a sales run of the LP for about a month. Sales activity started in a small way, then spread to San Francisco and Seattle. Bob Murphy, Columbia Record sales manager here, explained the operation this way: "A truck would pull up to the 'head shops' along Hollywood Boulevard, and offer the LP on a cash basis. They wouldn't write an order, they just took cash. First they started with the 'head shops' and they then went to the reputable record shops. The price started out at $12.98 and went down to a low of $5.98."

In Chicago, Dave Simmons, of Flypped Disc, said that the persons distributing "The Great White Wonder" came to the store Oct. 28 with three copies of the LP and wanted to know if they wanted more. He bought the three albums, but did not buy any more, since the sale was strictly on a cash basis.

"Sales have been steady but not outstanding," said a spokesman from Chicago's One Octave Lower. "We haven't gone out of our way to advertise. We just have it on the racks as 'Bob Dylan.' "

All of the Chicago stores have done little to promote the album, with just a copy in the window being enough for most stores.

Toronto Sales

In Toronto, the "Great White Wonder" album is being sold exclusively at A&A Records, one of Canada's largest retailers. The album is being sold for $10.95, and A&A manager, Sam Bornstein, reported that about 400 copies had been sold within a five-day period. Bornstein said that his source was in Vancouver. As far as he knew, the distributors were only making one retailing deal per city, to avoid the chance of being located by Columbia or Albert Grossman's office. Grossman is Dylan's personal manager. Bornstein said he was willing to take the risk of selling an album. "The word of mouth on the album has been incredible," he said.

I believe mine is an original. I bought it as a new buyer on ebay back in the 90's from a guy selling it as the Beatles White Album. I asked him if it was a mono pressing, he said yes, I bought it and found out I got ripped off. Or did I? Anyway, I still have it. It's in vg+ condition.
I just got it out. Yep, GF 001,002,003,004

Shouldn't the title in all releases be "The Death of EMMETT TILL" instead of being spelled "Emmet Tell?" Asking first, as to make a change now might upset some.

Classic album and must have for the Dylan fan. Like the pics, mine has two separate covers, not a gate fold. Dead Wax has runouts exactly as described. Sound quality is very good.

It is clear after some reasonably thorough investigation that this pressing is the first pirate version of "Great White Wonder", and was released in September of 1969. The evidence for this has been available almost as long as the LP has been out, and was reported in the February 7, 1970 issue of Rolling Stone:

"Columbia sent another of its private eyes, Pete Brito, to Norty’s Discount Records to take a picture of Norty Beckman. He then started with S & R and worked his way back through the production companies involved, using the picture to identify Beckman as the man who’s had [this pressing of] GWW produced. (It was determined that at each step, Beckman had used an alias, Gerald Feldman — the third name listed in the court order.) The private eye also saw all those albums coming off the press, and told S & R that Columbia thought they were breaking the law and they’d better stop. S & R, owned by Anastacio and Ofelia Sapian, told Brito they’d stop when a court told them to, and no sooner."

            Gerald Feldman = GF 001 / 002 / 003 / 004

That's the origin of the deadwax code for this release.

Great White Wonder - 2LP released July 1969
On April 9, 1969 Bob Dylan released "Nashville Skyline" on Columbia Records. It contained the #1 single "Lay Lady Lay", that my best friend Honorio Soto bought during that summer in Michigan. Living in an 8 house migrant labor camp as our families worked the crop fields of pinto beans & sugar beets in the Tri-City area of Bay City, Midland & Saginaw for almost 2 decades. I think that was the 1st time I had ever heard of "Bob Dylan", (we were 13 years old) and I scolded my friend, "WHY did you EVER buy that Awful record?!"
I thought it was one of the WORST songs I had EVER HEARD on the radio! What IS this steel guitar jazz with "pots & pans" drumming?! Country?! (We had been buying 45s since the previous summer by CCR, the Beatles, the Stones, The Doors, etc.)
"Who IS this Bob Dylan anyway?!" (Neither of us knew anything about the guy in 1969...)
But I still remember his answer when I asked him WHY? he had bought it?
He simply answered proudly, "Because I LIKE it!"
              Different strokes, .... indeed.

As we grew up, Honorio proved to be (to me) a very "un-Hip" guy, his clothes were "square", he never had long hair, and his further musical tastes were very un-rock & roll.
While he enjoyed pop rock & AM hits, and Spanish Tejano music, I "deep dived" into Led Zeppelin, Van Morrison, the Grateful Dead, the Velvet Underground, The Sex Pistols, the Stones (to name a few).
By the early to mid-1970s, I was also digging heavy into Bob Dylan, starting with "Broadside NEWPORT" (a live Vanguard Records album about the 1963 Newport Folk Festival featuring a very young Dylan on 2 live rare tracks) and also The Concert for Bangladesh (a 3LP Box vinyl set + Booklet on Apple Records about the 1971 Benefit concerts in NYC which featured Beatles George & Ringo, + Ravi Shankar, Eric Clapton, Leon Russell, Badfinger, and a WHOLE side of live Bob Dylan!) To me, Dylan was positively "on FIRE" by the 1975 Rolling Thunder Revue tour!

But back in 1969, after the release of "Nashville Skyline", many of his earlier fans were DUMBfounded & confused.... Has Dylan "lost it?" was their main concern...
Enter Patrick & Vladimir (or Merlin), future founders of Trade Mark of Quality Records, a foundation of the soon to EXPLODE bootleg industry, but in 1969, just 2 California kids with not just IMAGINATION, but "the gumption" to "follow through" on putting together some rare & unreleased Bob Dylan material, manufacturing and marketing "a masterpiece" as important as "Let It Be" by The Beatles or "Let It Bleed" by The Rolling Stones!
While the American buying public was rejecting (in large part) the "official" Nashville Skyline LP, they were tracking down & purchasing an inferior product (with NO cover artwork!!) that had much more "True Grit" (another 1969 masterpiece).

"Great White Wonder" provided fans and thrill seekers with Dylan recordings from as early as December 1961 in Minnesota (before his trip east to NYC), through the 1967 Basement Tapes (w The Hawks / soon to be The Band), all the way up to the then recent May 1969 Johnny Cash TV show!!
A gatefold white cover with NO lettering or wording ANYWHERE & plain white labels, really OUTdoing THE BEATLES "white album" one BETTER! NO poster & NO glossy pics! NOT needed.
"HOLD the lettuce & tomatoes, man, & just give me THE MEAT on a bun!"

What a Gift for "the Hungry" to find!!

My copy is one of the mixed bags spacehed mentioned. Yellow cover and sticker. First disc is psychedelic green, with dark pink labels sporting big black numbers. Second disc is arterial-blood red, with white labels sporting small, black farm-pig logos, plus SIDE 3, SIDE 4 in big black caps, and MADE IN HOLLAND in small caps at the bottom. Additionally, the sides are all wrong: side 3 plays side 4, side 4 plays side 2, and side 2 plays side 3. Only side 1 is right lol.

As this is just a very early copy of the original Great White Wonder, the title Great White Father is misleading.

Apparently, the full-on TMOQ edition done near the end of their existence. Stickered, stamped, with various colored vinyls, cover colors, and--a nice information insert. Some copies came with enclosed TMOQ catalogues that had listings for most titles up until 1973 or so..

Apparently, these showed up in different colored covers and vinyls as they were transitioned from the big 1-2-3-4 labels to the 'farm pig' labels.
