I own a version that has more blueish label, not a plain white one.
Anyone?

this is a slightly frustrating record. i should make my biases clear; i absolutely love the darker and more ambient side of the cocteau twins and am fairly cool to the more upbeat, almost new wave side. that means there's a lot to like on this record but there's also a bit to loathe.

the first two tracks are a bit too new-wave for my tastes. as she generally does, elizabeth fraser chirps in an imaginary language throughout the whole disc. now, i've heard some rumours that fraser often randomly picked words from cumbric, auregnais, norn and other "extinct languages" but i don't know enough of these languages to make any decisions. the reality is that fraser's sounds are generally articulated very clearly, so the vast majority of them are likely to be defined words in at least one of the hundreds of languages that are known to humans. the only constant seems to be that the sounds she uses are rarely words in english. those familiar with the work of sigur ros should know that they lifted their ideas about language from the cocteau twins. on these two tracks, fraser's enunciation (this is the word i'll be using) draws upon melodies that wouldn't be out of place in a mozart symphony. it's all very melodic, happy and correct.

starting with the third track, which is the high point of the disc in my opinion, the disc moves into much darker territory that i find much more appealing. the word that's often used is "gothic", but this is a weird term to apply to 20th century music that supposedly evokes feelings reminiscent of a european architectural era that coincided with musical romanticism. certainly, lots of romantic music was very "dark"; it's primary architect was beethoven, and in his angry, deaf and largely inebriated later years. however, what people label as 20th century "gothic music" really draws more from the baroque era. the third track on this disc is essentially a fugue involving a harpsichord (or heavily reverberated acoustic guitar), a bass and a voice.

the fourth track, persephone, is a strange experiment. it attempts to combine dark new wave with janis joplin influenced blues and is one of the few cocteau twins tracks to feature intelligible vocals. it's not a bad idea and it works in places - the underlying guitar solo is simple, but the dissonance and the effects work are pretty cool in an edge/fripp sort of way - but it ultimately just evokes imagery of a bad bar band.

from the fifth track on, the disc is solid. how can i describe this without falling back on overused words like "ethereal", "otherworldly", "atmospheric", "ambient", "trance-inducing" or "dreamlike"? let's try this...

suppose it's 1937, spanish revolution. somehow, you ended up in the middle of some kind of workers revolt and while you're not sure how or why, you know you're in the middle of something big so you decide to stick around for a while. you're in a little watering hole in barcelona listening to a sultry lounge singer and you don't know much catalan so you don't really know what she's singing about. but, boy, does she ever sound great singing about it! while you're staring down into your beer, your chair blows up. "shit!", says the guy at the other end of the bar, "wrong motherfucker.". time slows and distorts a little and a deep haze comes over your ears, enough to blur the notes but not enough to keep them out entirely. if the initial stages of transmigration take about a half an hour or so, the increasingly warped translation of the sound in the bar that enters your half dead ears and is understood by your half dead brain may sound a little like the last half of this record.

Can anyone describe the differences in sound quality? Is there one of the cd versions that has the same sound quality as the vinyl LP?

No album artwork brings it content better then Treasure: embracing heavenly voices wrapped around the listener, track names like Lorelei, Persephone, Pandora and an album title that is in now way exaggerated.
Sounds too good to be true? Open this jewel case and you will be lost! (WARNING: this CD contains ethereal lyrics that you will indeed either lover or hate as mentioned by dexterfeng, so beware that this is only my personal opinion ;)

Considered by many to be the best album by the Cocteaus. Hands down it's probably the prettiest save for Victorialand and yet another one of those galvanizing albums. You'll either LOVE them or HATE them after hearing it. Also the first album with new bassist Simon Raymonde.
Now that it's almost twenty years old, can we see a re-evaluation of it?
Massively important.
