Fantastic sounding pressing of this incredible album. I’m a first pressing collector anyway, but I’d never feel the need to buy any reissue for improved audio. Glorious.referencing Treasure (CD, Album, Reissue) SON 48
Stunning album, I couldn't be more happy with this CDreferencing Treasure (LP, Album) CAD 412
Does anyone else's copy have three rings around the hole instead of just one as pictured?
I have the Variant 6 version of this original UK press.- 4AD seems to have used the Robin Guthrie remaster (from the early 00s) for this, as this LP sounds an awful lot like that—and quite noticeably different from the original UK. Personally, I prefer the original 80s mastering, as I find Guthrie's remastering here to sound veiled, like a blanket thrown over the speakers, and lacking in that crystalline and airy high-frequency detail that makes the original sound so magical. The Guthrie remaster, by comparison, sounds like boomy mush, an apt description of the Guthrie remasters I saw on a message board. I suspect he was trying to make this and the other albums sound warmer, but it had the effect of making things sound kind of muddy and strange, at least in my opinion. I wound up selling my copy of this, as I vastly prefer the sound of the original UK pressing.
- It's a pretty decent pressing. It's hard to judge the sound of this album as its original master is already pretty stylistically low-fi sounding.
It's not an album to listen to for its mixing or mastering but more so for its ambience, vibe, and beautiful guitar and vocal arrangements. Later releases like four calender cafe are more apt for listening to in a "audiophile" context.
Overall, it's a pretty good reissue. Get yourself a poly lined sleeve if you're going to purchase this.
The picture sleeve is a magnet for static and dust. - dead quiet and crisp...maybe a little bright, but nothing major to complain...simple and affordable reissue, nothing wrong with that...

This pressing sounds phenomenal. As good as the original UK one. if not better- Edited 8 months agoPulled this out for a whirl...Flat, Next to zero surface, and it sounds beautiful on my modest system...I've heard some horrible represses/remasters and this is not one of those monstrosities in my opinion. I see a lot of these scathing reviews when a repress first comes out. I am not completely sure if:
A: If after the 1st run they get feedback or QC, then do a 2nd run ect... taking into account/fixing issues (It does seem the later reviews get better)//
B: Nostalgia/First Press/Original Bias which makes perfect sense because that is how it was meant to be heard at the time, whether good/bad/indifferent and people hate change.//
C: Certain individuals, with first pressings, do not like a decent repress due to the fact it diminishes return/value on their first press and a less likelihood of someone shelling out big $$$ for nostalgic/bragging rights for a minimal difference in the end product...Unless, the product is touted as Trash/Garbage/Horrible/ect...//
D: Another, a reviewer saying that it is the Best/Beautiful/Great/Perfect because they have a bunch for sale, trying to counter bad reviews, even though it is Trash/Garbage/Horrible/ect...
I am not sure, but I am sure that these are all possible reasons for this. In the end, it is up to you, your subjective ear, and you should decide for yourself.
