My copy of this record has the labels on the wrong sides. Side 1 is actually Side 2, Side 2 is Side 1.

The title track is a very powerful statement and one that was needed in 1969 as much as it's needed still today. I think Chuck D. from Public Enemy puts forth an interesting statement (which may have applied to more than him) that when he heard this track, he stopped accepting the label "Negro" and considered himself a Black man. It would be interesting to find out if this track was indeed a major turning point for the replacement of the older term. Other than the title track, there is a mix of vocal and instrumental performances, a lot more soulful than funky. For James Brown, a lot of it feels pretty standard though, and there aren't (in my mind) any more standout tracks. They're good, don't get me wrong- but considering all the powerful punches he was delivering before, this album largely takes a step back in the songwriting abilities we had come accustomed to from The Godfather of Soul.

This Polydor reissue sounds great, however! Nicely balanced with deep bass and clear vocals. They did a good job here.
