The Rolling Stones – It's Only Rock 'N Roll

My pressing is fine. Luckily, it doesn't have the same distortion issues as some others have reported with theirs. However, this is by no means a spectacular pressing. It's passable, and sounds best when cranked a bit. Not as good as some of the other Half-speed stones remasters I've heard.

Fantastic Rock "N" Roll Album By The Stones, Not One Of Their Masterpieces Though But For The Life Of Me It Does Have Several Of My Favourite Ever Stones Songs. The Album Is Very Promising With Killer Songs Like If You Can't Rock Me, Till The Next Goodbye, Time Waits For No One, Luxury And The Magnificent Hella Funky Fingerprint File. The Rest Is Unfortunately Abit Too Meh, If Only They Had Included Outtakes Like Through The Lonely Nights And Drift Away The Album Could Be Significantly More Balanced Quality Wise. I Have A NM First UK Pressing And It Sounds Pretty Good Although It Seems That The Mixing On This Album Is Quite Inconsistent With Some Songs Feeling Too Muddy And Cluttered And Others Very Nice And Detailed. All That Said However This First Press Is The Best I Have Ever Heard This Album.

In case anyone was wondering- this does exist. Probably one of the rarer stones records. I’ve seen more shadow cover aftermaths than these, so definitely quite rare.

Sounds great! I had to get about four copies of the U.S. version to find one that sounded right. Maybe I was snakebit, they all sounded like noisy vinyl.
This Japanese pressing has the typical whisper quiet vinyl. I got Goat’s Head thru to Undercover on Japanese vinyl. For cheaper than original pressings, or even reissues at my local record shop. Including the shipping costs.

Excellent pressing and every bit as good as some OG pressings I have. Big downside is cost but it's nice to have the speed-corrected and lengthier version of Fingerprint File. Throw in the extended drumbeat outro on Time Waits For No One too, if you're into that.

An unusual album: not among the Stones' best, obviously, but there are creditable attempts to force themselves out of the rut they'd fallen into by 1974. On 'If You Can't Rock Me' (the opener) and 'Fingerprint File' (the closer), Mick Jagger searches for a new vocal identity. The former is an upbeat rock song characterized by a halfhearted swagger; Jagger sounds like he's fantasizing about being the frontman for Humble Pie or some similar booze boogie outfit, and it's not very good. On the latter track, however, he finds a voice that's actually engaging. (It's interesting to note that when these songs were performed live in 1975 and '76, Jagger made no attempt to replicate the alternate voicings and delivered both numbers in his standard cocaine snarl.)

In between, there's one near-classic (the melancholy, majestic 'Time Waits for No One'), a lovely, tough-but-tender acoustic ballad ('Till the Next Goodbye,' the kind of number in which Keith Richards has specialized during the Stones' latter years and which, indeed, he could have voiced convincingly even here), and a reggae-influenced rocker ('Luxury') that's impossible to dislike. But at least half of "It's Only Rock 'n' Roll" is flatly mediocre, making it a challenging listen. The funky, sinister 'Fingerprint File' remains the album's most ambitious--if not most immediately appealing--track, and Mick Taylor clearly deserves a co-writing credit on 'Time Waits for No One,' Jagger's protestations notwithstanding.

One of the Stone's best albums in my opinion. This pressing has nice instruement separation but lows and mids seem a bit muddy.
