Sometimes also incorrectly referenced as "High Fidelity" due to the joke logo printed on the front cover.

The B-52's is an eponymous New Wave album by Athens, Georgia-based rock band The B-52's. The kitschy lyrics and mood, and the hook-laden harmonies helped establish a fanbase for the band, who would go on to release several chart-topping singles. The album cover was designed by Tony Wright (credited as Sue Ab Surd).

The B-52's peaked at number 59 on the Billboard 200 and "Rock Lobster" peaked at number 56 on the Hot 100. In 2003 the TV network VH1 named The B-52's the 99th greatest album of all time. Shortly before his death, John Lennon said he enjoyed the album. In his 1995 book The Alternative Music Almanac, Alan Cross placed the album in the #9 spot on the list of '10 Classic Alternative Albums'. In 2003 the album was ranked number 152 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

Probably a 90s reissue. For a standard Ferric tape with no Dolby encoding, this actually sounds pretty good, with the expected tape hiss of course.

It's alright not to like the B-22's ...

For nearly as long as I can remember it’s been pointed out by friends that I don’t own material by the B-52’s, and while I’ve attempted to ignore those questions, the fact remains that I don’t like the B-52’s, never have and never will.

Of course the B-52’s were fun [sort of], they were the darlings of the new thing called MTV, which is now dead and gone for the most part as well, and yes, the course MTV took can be directly related to the cheesy self-indulgent characterizations portrayed by the B-52’s.  Now please, don’t go thinking that I’m blaming the B-52’s for the downfall of western civilization, I simply found them to be as annoying as a broadway musical.  And therein lies my first serious dilemma, I kept my mouth shut about this band because I did not want to be thought of as homophobic, though their dress and antics were right out of the 70’s gay club theatrics, complete with gestures and movements that made them ‘oh so gay friendly.’

If you weren’t around during the middle to late 1970’s then much of this will be lost on you, as being an ‘affected’ gay person was all the rage, which included bands such as The New York Dolls, Rod Steward with “Do You Think I’m Sexy,” and of course Right Said Fred, along with many others who certainly would not have seen the light of day had it not been for the gay movement at the time.  Again, I’m not saying that the gay rights movement should not have existed, I totally support and embrace equality … and please don't go judging me, because you don’t know what I have or haven’t done in my life.  It’s simply that the culture began to swing toward a cheesiness that was so over the top, so exploited as the new ‘in thing,’ that I felt bombarded by a sensory overload that was assaulting my brain.

Yes, of course I recognize that many bands from this time period were reacting to noodling groups such as Emerson Lake & Palmer with their bombastic over the top shows, or Crosby Stills & Nash who would stand on stage and play to each other rather than to the audience, or the over production and indulgences of Fleetwood Mac … though even the godfather of all things gay, Elton John, was now preforming in a full duck-suit regalia.  What was I missing, what was I not getting???  All of this camp-nesss was not fun for me, it required too much energy, I didn’t understand how people could be ‘on’ twenty-four hours a day … though I’m sure that cocaine did manage to help.  But it was all as meaningless as a super club to me, there was nothing I could sink my teeth into, nothing to sincerely move me.  It was simply frontal lobe music and attitudes that while certainly suitable for a movie soundtrack about teenagers, it didn’t spark me to drop a B-52 record onto my turntable early in the morning, nor did I feel that I wanted to devote one minute of the life of my stylus to this sort of sound.

The B-52 where like a bad acid trip where the television cartoon characters not only come to life, but they begin to affect my life, calling out to me from other people’s apartments, cars at stoplights, high school football bands, and then clothing styles.  This was dancehall rock, a lava-lamp with glitter in it,  nonsense driven for the sake of being nonsense driven. Fred Schneider’s voice annoyed the hell out of me.  Yes again, of course I realize that these folks were mere kids during the darkest days of the last century, Nixon, Watergate, Viet Nam, all things that marked each and every person, like ghosts sitting on their shoulders, still whispering in their ears, so yes, I can certainly appreciate what these brightly coloured bands were attempting to do, it’s just that I didn’t like it anymore than I like The Rocky Horror Picture Show and the endless saga of Meatloaf albums.

The B-52’s were as delicious as a sugar coated ice-cream float bathed in chocolate, complete with an instant brain freeze headache, followed by an hour on the couch with an upset stomach, head in hands, softly repeating over and over, ”Ohhhh … what did I do?

The proof my all I’ve said is right here, in an interview regarding the creation of the classic [I don’t think so] “Rock Lobster”:  Kate Pierson: Fred [Schneider] started with the lyrics. He had gone to this disco … I think it was called the 2001 Disco, and he saw these crustaceans that were projected onto the wall, saw a rock lobster, and … I guess he wrote some lines about it. [Laughs.] And then we were sitting around at Bradley Peterson’s house, we always called it Bradley Peterson’s house, even though Ricky and Cindy [Wilson] had moved into his house after he moved, and that was the first place we jammed on “Rock Lobster.” Keith [Strickland] came over, and Ricky was just sitting there, grinning with his guitar in his lap. Keith said, “What are you smiling about?” And Ricky said, “I’ve just written the stupidest guitar line you’ve ever heard.” And it was … [imitates the guitar line.] And Keith just flipped out. He said, “That’s the best. That is just the greatest guitar line.” So when we jammed with that, Ricky and Keith developed the rest of that—well, mostly Ricky and Fred laid down the classic lines he had written, then Cindy and I added our harmonies and our fish sounds at the end. And that’s how it came about. I can still vividly remember us sitting in that room, coming up with the sound and just kind of working out the parts as we were jamming on it.

*** The Fun Facts: The band was not named after the huge bomber that laid waste to the country of Viet Nam, they took their name from a hairstyle which looked like the nosecone of a B-52.

This is the best B-52's album. Very high energy, fun music that created a lot of waves / was at the forefront of New Wave when it first came out. This album in a lot of ways defined New Wave and some songs like 52 Girls are as punk as anybody. Plus, Kate is just so cute.

this is a nice original 1979 pressing of the b52s debut lp released in japan shortly after it was released 2 months earlier in the us/uk, anyway this sleeve is rather thin, a bit glossy and comes with a 4 page insert with lyrics in both japanese and english, nice copy of this 1979 classic wich was there best record i felt as it had that new wave vibe to it but it also had a punky edge somewhat........... great memories hearing songs like dance this mess around and 52 girls, it has been a while

heard many times ; but in vinyl it's far better and makes me remember the sound of my childhood... still too soon to say if it will stay in the legend in the future. i doubt it. it's not so revolutionary and poorly emotional; too cold for me, too perfect, too artificial, too much produced....

Matrix / Runout: 1 3355-2 SRC+04 / M3S15.
but REAL Matrix from foto (if scan of disc in this release from THIS Release) is 1 3355-2 SRC+05
how it may be?
that for the sake of I started this polemic? simply I want to understand - whether it is worth creating new release if I have a disk with number of a matrix of 1 3355-2 SRC-01 from release with CAT# 3355-2

This album (and I'm almost 40. I'm going to call them albums until I...Well...) Was the very first album I ever bought. Sure, my parents let me buy albums when they went record shopping, but aside from Zappa's APOSTROPHE, those LPs don't count. THIS was the first record I went to the store on my own and bought with my own money. Like a lot of other people, I saw them on SNL, and was amazed. Even at the age of 10, something about their appearance was electric. It was amazing. And this album is the one of the top 3 post-punk new-wave classics of all time.
