Lovely sound, no noise vinyl. Die cut sleeve. Lovely record!

A truly great album. Great songs and production. A coherent listen from start to end. Incorporating a bit of all the best of their past (Dazzle Ships sonic motifs in particular). One of their finest albums, and the best so far of their reformation work. Enough said.

Cassette still available (along with History of Modern) on OMD website for £8 each. No need to pay inflated prices.

The 2021 cassette edition of "English Electric" sadly has the recording levels set too high, resulting in distortion on playback.

Nothing new under the sun here for OMD in the year 2013, as they were audibly recapturing their glory days of experimenting - the sleeve itself is an obvious restoration of "Dazzle Ships" artwork (with a touch of Haçienda) so it's not hard to imagine how "electric" some of the contents... happy though to hear them rediscovering their earlier selves - but yes, maybe a touch too late to sound as "cool" as this. Their first five ace albums released between 1980-84 still beat them at their own game.

                Wow!

I've never been a particularly rabid fan of OMD but I've had a great fondness for many of their singles. Their "Best Of" collection was the their most played album in my collection, until "Sugar Tax", and it's been individual tracks that caught my attention rater than whole albums. Then I heard about "History Of Modern" and was impressed when I heard it. It's always great to hear when a reunited line-up manages to capture their former magic. Then they release this…

                Wow!

Somehow this album transcends every prior OMD album for me! For me, this is the dream that OMD should have been right at the start - perfectly electronic, mechanical and human, cold and warm. It's like they took all the best elements of my favorite OMD songs and created an album just for me. From the Kraftwerk influences of "Metroland" to the beautiful "Stay With Me", which reminds me somewhat of "Souvenir" for some reason, this album is filled with wonderful electronic masterpieces that somehow manage to perfectly bring their early sound up to date and more.

I have to admit that my favorite album of recent years is "Instead" by Onetwo, and clearly bringing that updated embracing of modern electronic music back into OMD has, I think, benefitted the sound as it's managed to embrace old, new, and, hopefully, future fans in a way that "History Of Modern" only hinted at.

                Nicely done, OMD, nicely done.

Kissing the machine is a song from ex-Kraftwerk man: Karl Bartos from his 1993 album - Esperanto. (The artist name is Elektric Music, later: Electric Music, later: Karl Bartos). That album is VERY highly recommended! One of the best electropop of all time.

OMD Electric English "The Future Will Be Synthpop "

Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark is known most here in the United States for the song the contributed to the Pretty In Pink Soundtrack “If You Leave”. This is the song that lead singer Andy McCluskey says ruined there career. After that song they were not taken seriously and their fame began to faultier.

In Europe OMD was a New Romantic band that started having some fame in the late seventies and early eighties. There music was mostly synthesizers with very dramatic vocals and fluffy lyrics. However, in the early days this seemed to be a counter reaction and defiance to the earlier punk rock movement. By the time OMD put there famous song on the Pretty In Pink soundtrack it was a chick song in a chick movie.

The idea that in 2007 this one hit wonder band from the 80’s was reuniting may have seemed a bit silly in America but in England it had more appeal since they had more hits there. What was probably not expected was how they would redefine themselves into a modern synth pop band that has been able to be respected for the new stuff as much as their past hits.

There first new album “The History of Modern” which came out in 2010 was highly praised and respected. OMD was able to become part of the genera of both new synth music as well as package themselves to the older fans in a similar fashion to the Pet Shop Boys.

Now in 2013 their second album after reuniting Electric English goes even further in their new craft. Electric English is actually a concept album with a theme of frustration of how the future has not turned out the way we may have thought it should both technologically and personally. The music is modern but with very strong connections to the past. However, it’s now really their past with the Romantic style but more the of the earlier synth pop music by groups like Kraftwerk and Yaz/Yazoo. It’s amazing that this style of electronic music has not appeared to sound dated like other electronic music styles. The very early electric music was not pretending to be anything but electronic therefore it has an authenticity of it and it’s style that went along with if. Later electronic music, starting in the mid/late 80’s, was trying very hard to pretend to be other instruments which now sounds very plastic and fact and dated. The irony is that this album takes that very early electronic sound and style when the future was suppose to be a new frontier and reflects on the future, which is now, and says no it did not turn out (for better or worse) like we thought, but the music is still radical.

For the vinyl edition of the album the packaging is a very nice cover with cutouts that show the inner multicolored sleeve. The album has a very minimal label. The vinyl is 180 gm. The vinyl edition includes a CD copy as well.

This album adds nothing to the already existing OMD history, every track is a copy of an old OMD song you've already heard before. "Metroland" and "Kissing The Machine" are based on Kraftwerk's "Europe Endless". If OMD decides to make another album, they would need to team up with younger producers to pull it off and sound interesting.
