When you have a band who—after four years of recording music—have a respectable variety of singles and b-sides in the can, what do you do when you decide to release a singles collection? Well, if you're Alphaville's publisher, you take the two best-selling singles from the first album, and the two best-selling singles from the second album, and then add a remix of each song and try to pass this off as "The" Singles Collection. For a band like Alphaville, where the single version of a track usually differed from the album version, a singles collection that actually collected all of the band's singles would have been a great item for fans. And if you really wanted to please the fans, you would have added the b-sides, which from this band were just as enjoyable as the a-sides.

Instead, WEA/Atlantic gave us The Singles Collection, which is bafflingly incomplete and disappointing. The real tragedy here is that it was the best chance for Alphaville's early b-sides to be released on compact disc, but it did not come to pass.
